Top Tips for Notting Hill Carnival 2014

August Bank Holiday Weekend is finally here, which means one thing… CARNIVAL TIME!

For those of you heading West this weekend, you’re in for a truly colourful treat. Notting Hill Carnival’s famous extravaganza of Afro-Carribean culture brings heavenly street food, an eclectic mix of music, and an incredible display of wild and exotic costumes. So here’s our top 5 tips for enjoying London’s biggest party:

1. Bring the Family
Sunday is Family Day. There’s even a children’s parade! It’s a much quieter and more relaxed than Monday, and will be enjoyable for all the family. We recommend bringing earplugs/protectors, as the soundsystems can be very loud.

2. Eat Caribbean
At carnival, you’re never too far from a smoking barbecue, jerk chicken, goat curry, or ackee and salt fish. We highly recommend that you ditch the diet for the day and dig in! If you’re a veggie, look out for vegetarian patties, curries and chips.

3. Find a good spot
If you get there early enough, you’ll be able to grab yourself front row seats (on the floor) along the main route. If not, you can get great photos of the parade and feel part of the action by standing by the judges’ platform.

4. Stay Safe
Notting Hill Carnival is a lively, fun and welcoming festival, but like any huge event staying aware and alert is important. Avoid pickpockets by keeping your valuables out of sight and out of reach. There will be hundreds of police officers on duty, so if you have any worries, let them know.

5. Drink plenty of (Coconut) Water
It’s really important that you stay hydrated during carnival, especially if you’re consuming alcohol. Pack plenty of water, and don’t forget to take advantage of all the fresh coconuts on offer! Who knows, you may even find Chi giving out some free Coconut Water on Sunday… 😉
