Good Yoga Life is taking over one of London’s busiest tube stations for a week of classes and events with some of London’s top yoga and wellbeing experts. The week-long event in Old Street Station aims to positively interrupt the daily commute and offers commuters some much needed zen. Chi products will be available at the event all week so if you fancy nourishing your body with our products while taking part in some relaxing yoga practice, Old Street Station is the place to be!

Shoreditch commuters will join wellbeing experts such as Annie Clarke (Mind Body Bowl), Julie Montagu (The Flexi Foodie), Jody Shield (Life Tonic), Adam Husler (Boys of Yoga), Cat Meffan (Adidas), Marcus Veda (Yotopia), Emily-Clare Hill (Lululemon), Steffy White (Soho House & instructor to Deliciously Ella), Addictive Daughter & many more as part of a week-long takeover from 20th-26th June. The event also includes London’s first ever 12 hour Yoga-Relay, which will see up to 400 people raise money for homelessness charity Shelter on Saturday 25th June.

70,000 commuters pass through Old Street Station every day who are tired, stressed and not at all present. Research shows that we’re one of the most affected European cities when it comes to transport disruption and as a result mental wellbeing is affected severely. Last year a survey of more than 5500 commuters in London, Rome, Barcelona, Berlin, Madrid and Paris found that some rate the worry and strain of the commute to work on a par with a relationship breakdown – and often worse than the job itself! This week-long takeover offers a real opportunity to alleviate the stress of daily London commuting and get more people involved in yoga.

‘Low fat’ products could be the
cause of Britain’s obesity crisis

A headline aired on LBC Radio Station this morning has suggested that the cause of Britain’s obesity problem could be that we have received incorrect dietary advice for decades. The National Obesity Forum and the Public Health Collaboration have produced a report stating that the nation’s beliefs concerning what makes a healthy diet are false. Although it has been assumed that low-fat diets are the key to good health, now commentators claim that fats are essential to a balanced lifestyle and do not encourage weight gain. High fat foods such as avocados are in fact beneficial, while the real culprits are processed foods labeled as ‘low fat’ that often contain hidden sugars to compensate in taste for removed fat.

low fat products contain hidden sugar causing obesity

Dr. Aseem Malhotra, founding member of the Public Health Collaboration, claimed that guidelines promoting low fat products are ‘perhaps the biggest mistake in modern medical history resulting in devastating consequences for public health’. Instead, he promotes the consumption of fats ‘to get slim’. Indeed, the BBC documentary aired in 2015 titled ‘The Truth About Sugar’ explored the great extent to which sugar is hidden in processed foods such as low fat ready meals. The show followed the journey of four volunteers who slashed their sugar intake in a bid to lose weight. The results were impressive: 3 of the volunteers lost almost a stone each.

Fiona Phillips sugar and obesity

Fiona Phillips, presenter of BBC Documentary ‘The Truth About Sugar’, highlights hidden sugar in ‘low fat’ products

Similarly, recently celebrity chef Jamie Oliver launched his ‘war on sugar’ through his campaign aiming to underline sugar as the leading contributor to health problems in the UK owing to its persistent presence in supposedly healthy options in supermarkets. He has shown great support for George Osborne’s agenda to introduce a tax on sugar to reduce obesity that is to be implemented in 2018.

Instead of choosing products branded as ‘low fat’ or ’low cholesterol’, it seems that the way forward is a balanced diet free of added sugars and enriched with whole foods including those high in healthy fats.

Deliciously Ella

Serves 1

Ingredients

2/3 of a mug of coconut water (200ml)

1 tablespoon of coconut yoghurt (I use a brand called Coyo)

A big handful of spinach

1 ripe banana

1 tablespoon of bee pollen (optional)

Method

Simply peel the banana then place everything into a blender and blend until smooth.

Madeleine Shaw

Serve 1

Ingredients:

1 whole Thai coconut

200g of blueberries or other berry

1 tsp of honey (optional)

1 tbsp of desiccated coconut

¼ tsp of cinnamon

½ tsp of fresh grated ginger

Method

Crack open your coconut and pour the water into your blender, then scrape out the flesh. I use a cleaver knife to whack it open but there are also more sensible (and safe) methods and tools to get it open.

Place the flesh, honey (if using), cinnamon, ginger and almost all of the berries (reserving a few for decoration) blend until smooth then top with the desiccated coconut and leftover berries.

This will keep on the fridge for a day or so. It’s kinda fun it turns into a jelly ☺ but best to drink it fresh.

Sally’s Baking Addiction

Serve 1

Ingredients:

1/2 cup plain coconut water

2 frozen ripe bananas, previously peeled & sliced

1 cup chopped pineapple (frozen or fresh)

1 cup chopped mango (frozen or fresh)

2 cups spinach or kale

1/2 avocado, sliced

optional: 1 Tablespoon ground flax or flaxseed oil

Directions:

Make sure you have a strong, powerful blender. I like this Ninja or this Vitamix.

Add all of the ingredients to the blender in the order listed. Blend on high for at least 3 minutes or until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the blender as needed. Add more coconut water if it’s too thick.

The essential vitamins for
a Healthy Winter!

During winter your immune system is more sensitive and weaker than the other seasons, and that’s why you get sick more often. These common winter sicknesses (flu, colds, sore throat) are caused by vitamins or minerals deficiencies. To spend a happy healthy winter, pop to your local  store to get all the essential vitamins & minerals needed. Each vitamin plays an important role in your body, improving your energy, boosting your vitality.

Check out our guide list!

Vitamin C

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.18.07

Vitamin C doesn’t prevent colds and the flu, but it can reduce the length and severity of symptoms. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant. This means it protects the body against disease including heart disease and cancer. It is vital for the production of collagen, used to build body tissue and bones.

Where to find it?

Fresh fruit and vegetables, citrus fruits, kiwi fruit, strawberries and cranberries are an excellent source of vitamin C. Green vegetables (cabbage, broccoli and beans) and potatoes all contain high levels.

Iron

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.20.32

Iron is essential for the formation of red blood cells which carries oxygen around the body. A good intake of iron is necessary for energy, intellectual performance and vitality. A lack of iron leads to anaemia – where the body is unable to transport oxygen around the body causing lethargy and listlessness. Excessive iron may damage organs.

Where to find it?

Red meat is a rich source of iron. Other sources include cereal products, bread, flour, eggs, beans, lentils and dried fruit. Taking Vitamin C alongside iron helps with its absorption.

Vitamin D

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.22.09

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin required by the body for the absorption of calcium, bone development, immune functioning, and alleviation of inflammation.

Where to find it?

This essential vitamin is only absorbed when the body is exposed to sunlight. However, if you are not able to meet this requirement by this natural source, then vitamin D can be found in  milk and cereals.

Magnesium

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.23.58

Magnesium is required for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps regulate blood pressure, maintains bone strength, and ensures a healthy immune system.

Where to find it?

Halibut, nuts, peanut butter, spinach, oatmeal, beans, lentils.

Vitamin E

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.26.19

Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant protecting cell membranes from damage, and is thought to protect against some cancers and heart disease.

 Where to find it?

Nuts and oil are an excellent source of vitamin E. Green leafy vegetables (broccoli, spinach and cabbage) and cereals are also rich in vitamin E

Gluten
free

In the last few years the awareness of the negative health effect of gluten has increased. You might have seen a lot people  on gluten free diet. Don’t worry if you are little bit lost? First let’s understand what is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in several types of grains such as wheat, spelt, rye and barley. When flour is mixed with water, you obtain a sticky glue linked that gives elasticity to the dough. This sticky glue is the gluten! So now let’s see how bad it is to eat gluten.

Screen Shot 2016-01-14 at 14.43.04

Why should we go gluten free?

There are some studies  showing that even the individuals without celiac disease or diagnosed gluten sensitivity have adverse reactions to gluten. The gluten can occur  some digestive pain, bloating, stool inconsistency and fatigue. Also they are many people who believe that gluten may be addictive, whet is one of the most addictive foods after sugar.

The health benefits to go gluten free are:

  • Improved digestion and digestive function – a crucial aspect of effective weight loss is a healthy & efficient digestive system.
  • Excess fluid loss, and weight loss
  • Increased energy
  • Better bowel function and elimination
  • Improved mental function and better mood
  • Less cravings

How should we go gluten free?

Now you know why you should exclude the gluten from your diet, it’s time to see what you can eat. All the foods from grains are appropriate for a gluten free diet:

  • Corn in all forms
  • Plain rice in all forms
  • Amaranth, arrowroot, buckwheat, cassava, flax, millet, quinoa, sorghum, soy, tapioca and teff.
  • Flours made from gluten-free grain, nuts, beans and coconut.

Look for products labeled gluten-free

  • Milk, butter, margarine, real cheese, plain yogurt, most ice cream without gluten-containing add-ins.
  • Vegetable oils, including canola.
  • Plain fruits, vegetables (fresh, frozen and canned), meat, seafood, potatoes, eggs, nuts, nut butters, beans and legumes.
  • Distilled vinegar is gluten free. (See malt vinegar under NO below).
  • Distilled alcoholic beverages are gluten free because distillation effectively removes gluten. They are not gluten free if gluten-containing ingredients are added after distillation, but this rarely happens.
  • Mono and diglycerides are fats and are gluten free.

The food  to avoid:

  • Most ingredients with “wheat”
  • Barley and malt
  • Rye
  • Breaded or floured
  •  Soy and teriyaki sauces.
  • Foods that are fried in the same oil as breaded products are not considered to be safe on the gluten free diet.
  • Liquorice, which is made with wheat flour, and other candies that contain wheat or barley.

Cut down on
sugar for 2016!

You know how bad it is to eat sugar but it’s hard to stop. The latest research has proved that sugar is more addictive than tobacco, more dangerous than alcohol, more fattening than fat. You may not be eating Oreos by the roll or guzzling cans of  Coke, but that doesn’t mean sugar’s absent from your diet. Nowadays added sugar is everywhere even in a food that doesn’t  taste sweet such as bread, sauces or crisps. In this article we will give you all the tips to eat less sweet food!

Screen Shot 2016-01-08 at 12.20.33

Sugar  is an addiction like cocaine! It can be really hard to stop eating it!  first we have to understand why? If you’re addicted to sugar, there is  an emotional component. You’re craving and overindulging in sugar for a reason – you may be eating sugar to care for your emotions, to manage stress, or to care for your emotional, psychological or relational needs.

So now lower your sugar intake with these 8 easy ways:

1. Read the label

You will realise how often sugar is included to foods. Ingredients are listed in order of how much exists in the product, so if sugar is  near the top, that’s a red flag.

2. Don’t look for just the word ‘sugar’

Sugar hides under several sneaky names, including high fructose corn syrup, dried cane syrup, invert sugar, molasses, sucrose (or any word ending in “-ose”), brown rice syrup, honey, and maple syrup.

3. Buy the right products

Once you know where sugar hides, you can start making changes. Buy foods labeled “no added sugar” or “unsweetened.”

4. Take your time

In cutting down on sugar takes time. As we said sugar is like a drug so the beginning will be hard but the easiest way is reduce your consumption of sugar. If you normally put two packets of sugar in your coffee, for instance, try one for a week, then half, and finally add only a splash of milk.

5. Protein,protein…

Studies showed that sugar doesn’t cause proper satiety but it does make you hungry. So to avoid any craving, the best things to do is:

  • Eating breakfast every morning
  • Including fat and protein in your meals
  • Eating regular meals
  • Drinking more water

6. Sugar free, no calorie…?

Be careful don’t be tempting to buy the products with sugar free or no calorie write on it. The processed food manufactures are clever instead to use normal sugar they use aspartame or other substitute but they are even worst. When you eat something sweet, your body expects calories and nutrition, but artificial sugars don’t give your body those things.

7. Add flavours to your meals

Adding flavours will help you to eat less carbohydrate foods. Skip the flavored oatmeal and add a sweet kick with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.

8. Don’t drink it

Even drinks that are considered healthy can contain more of the sweet stuff than you’re supposed to have in an entire day. Case in point: “enhanced” waters (eight teaspoons per bottle), bottled iced teas (more than nine teaspoons per bottle), energy drinks (almost seven teaspoons per can), bottled coffee drinks (eight teaspoons per bottle), and store-bought smoothies (more than a dozen teaspoons—for a small).

9. Indulge yourself

It’s okay to have sometime a little treat but it needs to be occasionally.

Detox your
body

Going back to work after the Christmas break is pretty  hard.  Feeling tired, dont’ have enough energy? Don’t worry we are all feel like that. After few days enjoying some rich foods, sleeping late… There is no question your body is tired, we just need to get back our healthy habits.  The best way to do that is to detoxify your body  because detoxification helps the digestion, boost energy levels, skin cleansing… To name a few. So now let’s find out how to do it!

Screen Shot 2016-01-06 at 13.30.57

1. What food to avoid?

  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes
  • Milk products (except ½ cup unsweetened yoghurt with acidophilus each day)
  • Sugar, honey, maple syrup, artificial sweeteners
  • Coffee
  • Grains: wheat (bread, biscuits, cakes, pasta), rye, barley, oats, spelt and rice
  • Dried fruit

2. What’s the food to enjoy?

  • Fruit: any and all fresh fruit
  • Vegetables: any and all fresh vegetables
  • Fish: fresh, canned in water or olive oil
  • Lean red meat, chicken (without the skin). Limit to two servings per week.
  • Legumes: dried or canned, such as kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils
  • Eggs: preferably organic
  • Olive oil (preferably extra virgin), Coconut oil (unprocessed)
  • Nuts: raw unsalted almonds, walnuts, macadamias and cashews
  • Seeds: raw unsalted sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds
  • Green tea, white tea, weak black tea (decaffeinated)

3. Lemon Water

Add lemon to your water through out the day. The acid in the lemons assist the cleansing process. Citrus fruits, such as lemons, contain a pure concentrated form of citric acid. Citric acid works like bleach on fat. Due to its acidity and high ph, citric acid is able to actually penetrate and break down fat molecules. Try to drink one to three litres of water per day!

4. Best advice to detox

Exercise: During detox aim to exercise for one hour daily. Try to do intense exercises that makes you sweat.

Raw foods:  Aim to cut out the cooking process and eat mainly raw foods. Raw foods contain more nutrients and enzymes.

Chew: Aim to chew each mouthful of food 10 to 12 times before swallowing.

Rainbow Granola with Chi Coconut Oil

It’s easy to overlook this important meal when the pressure is on to get the turkey in the oven. But we all need breakfast for a good start to the day, so before you and your family delve into your presents, remember to tuck into a good breakfast too.

Try making your regular breakfast cereal more special than usual with one or more of the following ideas:

  • serving it with pieces of fresh apple and pear
  • you could throw in a few nuts, or dried festive fruits such as figs and dates
  • Or why not add a handful of brightly coloured berries to your breakfast, such as raspberries, blackberries, blueberries or strawberries? You can usually buy berries frozen, even when they’re out of season.
  • Frozen fruit and veg, as well as fresh, tinned and dried, all count towards the 5-a-day fruit and veg target.

If you’re a granola person, why not jazz up your daily serving with:

  • several slices of fresh tangerine and banana
  • a few grapes
  • a handful of seeds or nuts

Here’s a festive granola recipe using Chi coconut oil.

Guilt free
Christmas dessert

Christmas is nearly approaching, we are already starting to eat chocolate, cookies… The festive season is usually associated with gaining weight, but this year it won’t be the same! The food that will destroy your diet the most is dessert,  we have gathered some healthy dessert recipes that will indulge your craving for a Christmas sweet. You can tell us thank you;)

We have to start with a chocolate recipe, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without chocolate. Eating chocolate can be good for your health, it improves your cardiovascular health. This is because chocolate, particularly dark chocolate with 70% or more cocoa , contains flavonoids. However the high fat and caloric content of chocolate can counteract these benefits by causing weight gain if regularly eaten in large amounts. Also it’s better to avoid any of milk chocolate or white chocolate (high in sugar and fat).

Fruity Chocolate bar

Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 14.23.15

@givingtreesnack

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces good quality, dark chocolate (70-80%), very finely chopped
  • 1 cup assorted  Giving Tree fruits, large pieces roughly chopped

Directions

Gently melt chocolate on the lowest possible heat setting. Stir regularly, removing from heat as needed. The goal here is to keep the temperature under 90 degrees, be patient, keep stirring, and even with the heat on a low setting the chocolate will melt eventually.

Once melted and smooth, pour chocolate onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread into an even layer (it will not cover the entire pan, just spread it until it’s as thick as you want your final bark to be).

Sprinkle evenly with Giving Tree fruits. Let dry, uncovered at room temperature, for 1 to 2 hours or until set. Break into serving size pieces.

Because of the nature of freeze-dried fruit, this particular bar is best enjoyed within a day or two, as the fruit will begin to soften once exposed to humidity. The bar is good for up to a week, however, the fruit just might be a bit softer after a few days out in the open.

A traditional dessert that nobody can resist is the apple pie… with less sugar.

Apple Pie

Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 14.35.54

Step 1. Prepare the pastry
In a food processor, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons coconut palm sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add 3 tablespoons cold, unsalted butter (cut into 1/4-inch pieces); pulse until large flakes form. Add 7 table-spoons trans fat-free shortening and pulse until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Sprinkle 1/3 cup cold water over the mixture, about 2 tablespoons at a time, tossing with a fork to mix. Roll the pastry into 2 balls, one slightly larger than the other. Flatten into 3/4-inch thick disks on separate sheets of plastic wrap. Wrap and refrigerate for 45 minutes.

Step 2. Make the apple filling
Peel, core, and slice 5-6 apples, enough to make 6 1/2 cups. Add 3 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Toss well; set aside.

Step 3. Assemble the pie
Preheat oven to 400º. Place larger half of chilled pastry on a 12-inch sheet of plastic wrap. Dust dough with flour and roll into a 12-inch circle with a floured rolling pin, then invert over a 9-inch pie pan. Peel off plastic and gently tuck pastry into pan, letting edge drape over sides. Lightly moisten upper edge of dough with a damp pastry brush. Transfer filling to pie shell. Roll other half of pastry into an 11-inch circle on plastic wrap. Invert over filling, then peel off plastic. Pinch edge to seal; trim excess.

Step 4. Bake till golden
Create decorative edge on crust with fork. Slit top pastry for steam vents. Brush top of pie with milk and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar. Bake for 20 minutes on center oven rack, shield-ing edges of crust with foil. Reduce heat to 375º; continue baking until the pie is golden brown and juices bubble through at least one vent, another 30 minutes. Insert wooden skewer into pie; there should be no resistance. Transfer pie to cooling rack and cool at least 1 hour before serving.

Cranberry Jam tart
Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 14.44.05

@coconutandberries

No-Bake Cranberry Jam Tarts

  • 1Cup Almonds
  • 1/2Cup Rolled Oats (not quick-cooking)
  • 3/4Cup Soft Dates
  • Pinch of Salt

Quick Cranberry Jam:

  • 1 1/2 Cup Fresh OR Frozen Cranberries
  • 2T Maple Syrup
  • 2T Coconut Sugar
  • 1/4C Orange Juice
  • 1/2C (approx) Water
  • Zest of half an orange
  • 1/2t Vanilla Extract

Using a food processor, blitz the almonds and oats together to form a fairly fine flour. Add the salt and the dates and process until you have a thick mixture which holds together when pinched between finger and thumb. You may need to add a couple of extra dates if it’s too crumbly.

Divide mixture between the 12 holes of a shallow cake/tartlet tin and press firmly in the base and up the sides to form 12 neat tart shells.

Refrigerate or freeze until ready to fill.

For the jam, place all ingredients except vanilla in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer. Allow to simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, stirring, until the cranberries have all popped and the jam has thickened up. Pour into a jar and refrigerate until cool. (I left mine chunky but blend with an immersion blender if you prefer yours smooth)

Run a knife around the edges of the tart shells to loosen them and pop them out of the tin. Fill each with a couple of teaspoons of the jam.

Serve at room temperature

How to get a
flat belly quickly?

Who doesn’t dream of  having a flat belly? Most people are obsessed with their belly even at Chi HQ. To have a flat belly depends really on what you eat and how many time you workout during the week. So in this article you will find out how to get your flat belly in a short time.

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 11.58.52

What to eat? What food to avoid?

The first piece of advice that we can give you is to avoid as much as you can sugar. This will keep insulin levels low and also keep levels of glucagon high. Glucagon plays an active role in allowing the body to regulate the utilisation of glucose and fats. This hormone, is the best friend you could ever have in the struggle for a flat belly! The closer to zero grams of sugar you consume, the lower your insulin and the higher your glucagon levels.

Salt can make your tummy bloat also so try using natural sea salt or kosher salt, which is lower in sodium.

The best flat belly menu

Breakfast: A slice of whole-wheat bread with natural peanut butter and 1 cup of your favourite berries or a nice porridge full of vitamins.

Lunch: Spinach salad with sliced avocado, grilled firm tofu, and cherry tomatoes, drizzled with a little olive oil and fresh lemon juice.

Dinner: Grilled salmon, a roasted sweet potato, and sautéed asparagus with olive oil and garlic.

Snack: A cup of fat-free yogurt with 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds.

Tip 1: To prevent bloating, chewing is the best tip! Chew food until it is like applesauce in your mouth. Digestion begins in the mouth, and without proper chewing, food is not well-digested.

Tip 2: Eating portion-controlled meals that include whole-grain foods throughout the day is the best way to eat for a flat belly.

How many days per week should I exercise?

Exercising is the best way to have a healthy way to live.  To get your flat belly of your dream you have to focus on abs exercises.

But you should first start your workout by cardio exercises. They will heat up your core temperature and improve circulation, both of which will aid in acquiring a flat stomach. Strive for at least 30 minutes a day minimum.

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 14.41.45

And then your can simply do the crunch abs. You will have a flat stomach in no time!

Chi Coconut
Porridge

You can’t be a true British if you don’t eat porridge for breakfast! It is the perfect compromise while it’s simple and quick to make it, there’s now another reason to love this most healthy breakfast. According to several studies, people who eat oats and other wholegrains live longer and are less likely to die from heart disease. The cereal grain’s proven talents include helping to lower high blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol. Not to mention that it’s packed with a lot of vitamins, minerals and fibre.

In this article we will give all the best tips to make yummy porridge with Chi coconut milk.

Screen Shot 2015-11-12 at 12.11.16

You can find a thousand ways  to make porridge but the basis is all the time the same. Porridge as we know it today, is made by mixing oats with a fluid (water and or milk) and then heating it.  Beyond that it is all down to personal preference, here are some ideas!

Chi Chocolate Porridge

Screen Shot 2015-11-12 at 12.38.471. Mix the oats and Chi Chocolate coconut milk . Set over a low heat and cook for about 20 mins, stirring every now and then to prevent the porridge from sticking, until it’s thick and creamy – add a splash more Chi milk if you like it thinner.

2. To serve, spoon the porridge into bowls, top with some almond pieces.

Honey Coco porridge

Screen Shot 2015-11-12 at 12.45.50

1. Mix the oats, Chi coconut milk (plain) . Set over a low heat and cook for about 20 mins, stirring every now and then to prevent the porridge from sticking, until it’s thick and creamy – add a splash more Chi milk if you like it thinner.

2. To serve, spoon the porridge into bowls, top with some almond pieces plus some banana and a little bit of chocolate pieces. To finish you can drizzle with honey.

Creamy Blueberry Coconut Porridge

Screen Shot 2015-11-12 at 12.51.14

1. Simply add the water, oats, Chi coconut milk to a saucepan and allow it to heat for about ten minutes, until the liquid has all been absorbed.

2. Then stir in some Chi organic coconut oil and let it dissolve into mix.

3. Once it’s all nicely mixed pour it into a bowl, add blueberries and coconut chips.

Enjoy!

Prevent Cancer with Chi
Raw coconut water!

Nowadays more and more people are fighting cancer than ever before. Hundreds of  thousand people are diagnosed  with cancer every year in the UK. There are over 200 different types, each with its own symptoms, methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Several researchers claim the health properties of coconuts are numerous,  including its ability to prevent cancer, how wonderful is that?! Coconut water is amazing at getting rid of the symptoms and damage done by chemotherapy. It is an electrolyte, it oxygenates the blood, it restores the ANC count, white blood count, haemoglobin, platelets, etc. As if that weren’t enough, because it is an anti-microbial, it can also help to reduce microbes inside cancer cells and aim to revert them into normal cells. In other words, it can be a fighting force of cancer treatment!

Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 14.28.31

Sounds too good to be true?

You have to keep in mind that current research is too preliminary to confirm. But with all the benefits coconut water contains we are really optimistic.

Note:  you must use fresh “young coconuts” and extract the coconut water.

For cancer prevention and overall good health, there is no substitute for the three basics: an overall healthy diet, staying a healthy weight, and daily physical activity.

What are
Superfoods?

The last few years, we’ve seen a lot of foods labeled ‘superfoods’, but what are superfoods? There is no legal or medical definition. It’s generally accepted that superfoods contain high levels of much-needed vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. Eating them may  help prevent diseases  and they make you healthier and aid weight loss too.

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.12.06

Here is your 10 best superfoods:

1. ACAI

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.16.01

The acai berry contains antioxidants, substances that fight harmful molecules, known as one of the few fruits with oleic acid—the same heart-healthy fat in olive oil.

2. ALMOND

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.22.27

Almonds are rich in monounsaturated fats; much research now links this type of fat with a reduced risk of heart disease. These nuts are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, which help to protect against UV light damage and Alzheimer’s disease.

3. CACAO

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.26.29

Who’d have thought?! Raw chocolate contains many important vitamins and minerals including:

  • Magnesium, and other essential minerals including calcium, sulfur, zinc, iron, copper, potassium, and manganese
  • Polyphenols called flavonoids, with antioxidant properties
  • Vitamins: B1, B2, B3, B5, B9, E
  • Essential heart-healthy fat: oleic acid a monounsaturated fat
  • Protein
  • Fibre

4. GREEN TEA

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.31.32
Green tea contains B vitamins, folate (naturally occurring folic acid), manganese, potassium, magnesium, caffeine and other antioxidants, notably catechins.
5. COCONUT
Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.33.51
Coconut contains properties that can prevent, or even cure, a wide range of ailments from heart disease to Alzheimer’s. Especially coconut oil which has so many benefits such as:
  • Protects against heart disease by increasing good cholesterol and lowering the ratio of bad and good cholesterol.
  • Helps treat malnutrition because it is easy to digest and absorb.
  • Kills disease-causing bacteria, fungi, yeasts and viruses because of the antimicrobial effects of its fatty acids.
  • Helps diabetics by slowing sugar release into the bloodstream.
  • Prevents strokes and brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
  • Boosts metabolism and increases energy because it is more likely to be burned as fuel than stored as body fat.

Our raw coconut water  is also rich in antioxidants and nutrients too.

6. SALMON

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.42.41

Salmon is a superfood because it’s high in omega-3 fatty acids, a type of fat that seems to decrease the risk of heart disease.

7. KALE

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.45.32

The health benefits of kale go well beyond providing a truckload of vitamins and minerals; this superfood is packed with phytonutrients such as glucosinolates and flavonoids as well. Thanks to its broad nutritional profile, kale is thought to help fight cardiovascular disease, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis; to prevent several types of cancer and pre-mature aging of the skin; and to promote the health of the urinary tract.

8. QUINOA

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.49.06

Often referred to as the supergrain, quinoa is high in fibre and high-quality protein. In fact, it contains more protein than any other grain while also packing in iron and potassium.

Organic
September!

This September, the Soil Association is holding the “Organic September’. This initiative is to understand the impact of buying organic products.  The buying decisions you make are simple but powerful! Small changes can make a big difference. We also think that it’s so important to make the right choice  by buying organic. But, why should we buy organic?

COesjsSWsAA2PNP.jpg-large

  • Avoid chemicals

Eating organic is the way to avoid all the chemicals in your fruit and vegetables.

  • Better taste

You will taste the difference between an organic product and a non-organic product.Try it!

  • Preserve your ecosystem

Organic farming supports sustainability. Preservation of soil and crop rotation keep farmland healthy, and chemical abstinence preserves the ecosystem. Insects, frogs, birds, and soil organisms are able to play their roles in the ecology life, and we are able to play ours, without interference or compromising.

  •  Reduce pollution

Agricultural chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers are contaminating our environment, poisoning our precious water, and destroying the value of fertile farmland. Certified organic standards do not permit the use of toxic chemicals in farming and require responsible management of healthy soil and biodiversity.

  • Keep our children and our future safe

Spending money in the organic sector is a direct vote for a sustainable future for the many generations to come.

So what are you waiting for? Make a small change to your everyday shopping.

Screen Shot 2015-09-14 at 12.40.07

INGREDIENTS

 Healthy crust

  • 3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1/3 cup Chi coconut oil
  • 5 tablespoons cold water

Filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 cup fresh corn
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • handful basil leaves

Method

  1. To prepare crust: Combine whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper in a large bowl. Make a well in the center, add oil and water and gradually stir them in to form a soft dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  3. Roll the dough into a 12-inch circle on a lightly floured surface. Transfer to a 9-inch pie pan, preferably deep-dish, and press into the bottom and up the sides. Trim any overhanging crust. Line the dough with a piece of foil or parchment paper large enough to lift out easily; fill evenly with pie weights or dry beans. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil or paper and weights. Let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes or up to 1 hour.
  4. To prepare filling: Whisk eggs and milk in a medium bowl. Sprinkle half the cheese over the crust, then layer half the tomatoes evenly over the cheese. Sprinkle with corn, thyme, 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper and the remaining 1/4 cup cheese. Layer the remaining tomatoes on top and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pour the egg mixture over the top and add handful basil leaves.
  5. Bake the pie until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 40 to 50 minutes. Let cool for 20 minutes before serving.

  3. Preheat oven to 190 C . Line a pie dish with shortcrust pastry, cutting off any excess and pinching the edges.
  4. Spread the caramelized onions in the bottom of the crust. Layer corn, tomatoes and jalapeños over the onions. Top with cheese. Whisk eggs, egg whites, milk, sour cream, pepper and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Pour the mixture into the crust.
  5. Bake the quiche until puffed and firm when touched in the center, 40 to 50 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. To serve, cut into 8 pieces.

Yoga vs Pilates, Which
one to choose?

Yoga or Pilates, don’t know which one to choose?  In the last few years the number of Yoga and Pilates classes available has increased so much. But why? These activities have so many health benefits and it helps you to keep you active.  But are you still confused about the difference between these two? Don’t worry we are here to clarify that!

Let’s have a closer look at these two practises to help decide which one is right for you.

1. Do they have the same origin?

Firstly, we have to know from where they are form.

Yoga originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. It has evolved over the years and cultures into many types of yoga such as Bikram, Ishta, Purna & Ashtanga.

Pilates was created by an athlete, Joseph Pilates in the mid-20th century. He created several exercises to improve his strength. Then dancers started to practicing theses exercises to help them to become more performance.

2. What is the main difference?

Both Yoga and Pilates bring an understanding that the mind and the moody are connected.

Pilates requires concentration and focus to find a centre point to control your body through movement. While Yoga is built on the connection between the mind, body and the sprit. It is designed to increase your body’s efficiency and your overall health and wellbeing.

3. Challenging your body

Both exercises will help you to gain strength and flexibility.

Pilates puts you in to unstable positions by moving your limbs. Some classes use machines to gain strength and some others classes make you use your body’s resistance. Whereas Yoga is made up of a series of static postures and you will work out all your muscles in your body equally.

Screen Shot 2015-07-15 at 14.58.07

4. What are the health benefits?

Both are a great workout. Here is a list of all of the benefits that you can expect to get from Yoga & Pilates:

  • Improved flexibility
  • Increased muscle strength and tone, particularly of your abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks
  • Balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body
  • Enhanced muscular control of your back and limbs
  • Improved stabilisation of your spine
  • Improved posture
  • Rehabilitation or prevention of injuries related to muscle imbalances
  • Improved physical coordination and balance
  • Relaxation of your shoulders, neck and upper back
  • Safe rehabilitation of joint and spinal injuries
  • Prevention of musculoskeletal injuries
  • Increased lung capacity and circulation through deep breathing
  • Improved concentration
  • Increased body awareness
  • Stress management and relaxation.

5. Which one is for you?

If you are looking more to manage your stress and to be more spiritual, yoga is for you.  If you want to focus more on your back and your core body, Pilates will be the better option. If you still don’t know what to choose why not to try both and see which one you prefer.

So now book your classes!

If you have an office, you already know how hard is to exercise at your work place. Office spaces are set up to require little movement, you are in front of your computer, sitting all day. This has a huge impact on your health, it can increase your weight, also increase the strain on your back, wrists, eyes and neck. Now it’s time to fix that!

Today Chi team will give you all the keys to improve your health at your work. You won’t need gym clothes, or even a shower. We’ll give you some easy exercises to do anywhere in the office.

Also keep your legs bent at the knees so that the knees are only slightly higher than your hips. Your feet should be flat on the floor or on a step stool of some sort.

3.  Stretch as much as you can during the day

Protect Your Skin from the
sun with Coconut Oil

The sun is shining! What you want to do is to go out and tan.  Especially in summer  – you want to get a sun-kissed glow but without the sun damage! There’s no denying that most people look healthier when they are tan. However, as we all know, UV radiation is dangerous for our skin. Skin can develop freckles, rashes and, over time, UV radiation can  accelerate skin ageing and cause pigment changes commonly known as ‘age spots’. It can also cause changes in the skin cells, which may lead to skin cancer.

At Chi HQ we have all the best tips that you need to know before going on vacation. First, let’s talk about the must have during  summer:  sunscreen.

How to choose your sunscreen?

Selecting a sunscreen depends on many factors such as how sensitive your skin is to burning, how dry or oily your skin is. If you have fair skin that burns easily you should choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF 50+.  If you have a skin that tans readily you could choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with intermediate SPF 15-20+. And If you have darkly pigmented skin and do not suffer heavily from sunburn, you need a sunscreen with low SPF 8-15+.

Sunscreen-for-face-1

How to use it?

It is extremely important to use sunscreens correctly to achieve the best protection.

  • Apply sunscreen liberally to all sun-exposed areas so that it forms a film when initially applied.
  • It takes 20-30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin and it can be rubbed off very easily, so apply it at least half an hour before going out in the sun.
  • Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours if staying out in the sun for more than an hour during the day.
  • Re-apply immediately after swimming, excessive sweating, or if rubbed off by clothing or toweling. This should be the case even if the product claims to be “water resistant”.

What are the alternative of the sunscreen?

ee7541371ff13b0e0c6c5f7b8967eadd

You won’t believe it, but Chi Coconut Oil can be used as a sunscreen. Native pacific islanders have been using coconut oil sunscreen for thousands of years.  It is the best way to get a healthy tan and Vitamin D. It’s a natural sunscreen – it blocks about 20% of UV rays when applied.

But you have to keep in mind that as dermatologists will tell you  ‘no tan is a healthy tan’ (hard as it is to resist!)

How to heal your sunburn?

Sunburn often leads to dehydration, which can cause headaches. So skip the margarita and opt for a massive glass of  Chi Raw coconut water, super-hydrating.

Screen Shot 2015-07-01 at 12.00.54

Also you should hydrate your skin, be sure to apply lotion to your body including the sunburned area.  You can use Chi Coconut Oil as well!

Adding lots of fresh summer fruits and juicy flavours into your breakfast is the perfect way to give you a taste of the tropics. So Instead of the usual cereal and milk why not swap it with some of these quick and easy ideas.

STEP 1: The Base – Choosing the Smoothie

Smoothies are a great alternative to milk, with a sorbet taste, natural sugars and an awesome cleanser to the body; you can use this as a base. Here are some summer bursting smoothie tips using some of our Chi products:

Choco-Raspberry Heaven:

 Strawberry Mango Delight:

  • 5-6 strawberries, frozen or fresh
  • 1.5 cup mangoes, frozen or fresh (about 2 medium yellow mangoes)
  • (1/2) cup Chi Coconut Milk
  • up to (1/2) cup water

Berry Purple Power (Serves 2):

  • 1/2 cup frozen raspberries (or fresh)
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries (or fresh)
  • 6 strawberries (large, fresh preferred; frozen is OK)
  • 1/2 cup Chi Raw Coconut Water
  • 1/2 cup greek yogurt (vanilla)
  • 1 tbsp honey (or to taste, optional)Screen Shot 2015-05-29 at 12.36.42

Step 2: Choosing the MAIN topping

Now it’s time to pick some toppings you could add to your smoothie bowl!

  • Adding a creamy fruit like a chopped banana is perfect to compliment the tangy taste of the berries, as it will add more sweetness to it.
  • Honey Granola sprinkle
  • Crushed Weetabix
  • Museli/ Toasted Buckwheat
  • Chia pudding
  • Or adding even more fruit is another option!Screen Shot 2015-05-29 at 12.38.23

Step 3: Any Extras?

If you want to add anymore toppings to more flavour, these are highly recommended!

  • Shredded Coconut
  • Cacao Nibs
  • Crushed Almonds (any nuts)/seeds
  • Dried fruit
  • A blob of Whole earth peanut butterScreen Shot 2015-05-29 at 12.41.45

You can mix and match any of the smoothies with the toppings for your own desired taste!

Vegan, sugar-free magnum choco-blocks

What you need:

  •  Blender
  • Saucepan
  • 8 Ice cream moulds

Ingredients (makes 8):

For the ice cream:

  • 2 ripe bananas, frozen
  • 1 400mL can full fat coconut milk, chilled if possible
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • t teaspoon vanilla bean paste

For the chocolate:

Method

For the ice cream: Pop the ice cream ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into ice cream moulds, add your sticks and pop into the freezer to set overnight.

For the chocolate: Put all the ingredients into a pan and heat on a very low heat until you create a smooth consistency. Be careful not to burn/overcook.

When you get the ice creams out, allow to defrost for a few minutes so they come out of the moulds easily. Alternatively run the moulds under hot water to loosen the edges.

To make the magnum…

Classic: Dip the ice cream into a bowl of chocolate. Use a icing knife to smooth out any edges but be quick because it should set almost immediately. Repeat to create a nice thick layer of chocolate. Pop back into the freezer for a few minutes to completely freeze. Enjoy!

Almond: As per Magnum Classic, but add a handful of slithered almonds to sandwich between chocolate layers.

Peppermint: As per Magnum Classic, but add 1 tablespoon of mint extract (or to taste), a handful of fresh mint and a few drops of green food colouring/spirulina  to the ice cream mixture.

Storage: in a freezer safe container in the freezer for up to 5 days.

Why Drink Chi during
A Workout?

As we all know it’s so important to drink water, particularly during a workout. But what should we drink during intense exercise? Its hard to find a drink that will keep you hydrated and give you the energy needed. In this article you will find a few suggestions of drinks that you could drink during your workout.

First we have to understand what our body needs.

When we sweat we loose a lot electrolytes. Here are the common electrolytes that we loose during working out:

– Sodium & Calcium

– Potassium

You must replace them by drinking a fluid that contains electrolytes. Water does not contain electrolytes.

Also we need carbs to refuel & give you energy and proteins helps to repair any damage.

What is the right amount to drink?

Doctors recommend to drink 8 ounces every 15 minutes during workout and to ‘drink to thirst’. But don’t drink too much because consuming a lot of fluid but not enough sodium can develop an hyponatremia condition. However this case is really rare most people don’t drink enough!

So what to drink?

For sure water is the easiest solution, it’s fine to consume it when it’s not an intense workout. But water doesn’t contain electrolytes.

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 14.02.11

Chi Raw Coconut Water suits an intense workout perfectly as it contains a high level of electrolytes and also it gives you the energy needed from its natural sugars.

Raw250

If  you prefer milk-type drinks, why not try our Dairy Free Chi Chocolate Coconut Milk.

Chocoloate milk 1ltr

After working out what to get?

Doctors recommend to have protein & carbs after workout. As we saw previously, protein repairs any muscle damage and carbs give you energy. So it’s time to make some delicious smoothies with Chi Coconut Milk!

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 14.49.07

What you need:

2 Bananas

2 large handfuls of spinach roughly chopped

2 handfuls of blueberries

7 large strawberries chopped

1 cup of Chi coconut milk

Chi coconut water to thin if needed

1/2 cup Flax seed

Now you know what you have to drink,  go workout!

Eat less sugar! You
will see the difference.

Everywhere you can hear ‘eat less sugar, sugar is bad for you’. Of course, you would like to eat less sugar, but it’s hard and you don’t know how. Don’t worry. I am here to help you figure out how to reduce sugar to become healthier.

So first let’s try to understand why we love sugar so much?

All humans have loved sugar for years and years.  Sweet is associated with the notion of pleasure and reward in our brain. When we eat sugar we secrete dopamine (the neurotransmitter of pleasure) so obviously, as it’s joyful to eat sugar, you just want to repeat this behaviour. That’s why all the junk food is full of sugar even in salty foods.

How to eat less sugar?

You have to change your bad  habits and relearn how to eat healthy without being on crazy diets. Just choose healthy food with good quality, fruits & vegetables and eat less processed foods as possible. Changing habits will take time but you will see the difference in the long term and you will also change your taste. Time to try new things!

What are the alternatives to sugar?

The best alternative to sugar is fruits such as bananas, grapes, strawberries… they are full of vitamins and they contain a lot nutritional content. However, beware of pure fruit juice, as you are just drinking pure fructose which will turn to fat.

You have some healthy sugar such as:

Coconut palm sugar (extracted sap of the coconut palm, boiled and dehydrated)

images-3

Date sugar (dehydrated, ground dates)

images-4

Brown rice syrup (brown rice, which is cooked and then exposed to enzymes which breaks it down into sugar)

images-5

Why not try our Raw Coconut Water – no added sugar!  As nature intended!

Lovely Brunch
Recipes

The weekend is coming! Woohoo!

During the weekend you just want to enjoy your lazy morning with a nice brunch to share with your family or your friends. But you don’t know what to make?  At Chi we have some tasty recipes to illuminate your morning.

For these brunch recipes we focused on egg omelette because there are so many benefits to eating eggs in the morning.  A lot of studies showed that eating eggs help you to maintain a calorie deficit and lose weight. Not to mention they are really easy to make!

Sweet – Orange Coconut Omelette

omelette

@thehealthyfoodie

Ingredients – Serves 1

3 large eggs

¼ cup Chi coconut milk

½ tsp orange zest

Pinch salt and black pepper

1 tbsp Chi coconut oil

Method

  • Add Chi coconut oil to a non-stick pan and heat over medium-high heat.
  • Add eggs, orange zest, salt, pepper and coconut milk to a small mixing bowl and give this a good whisk, until slightly frothy.
  • Pour that mixture into the preheated pan and swirl it around to spread your omelette evenly over the entire surface of the pan.
  • Let the omelette settle for a few seconds then run a heat resistant rubber spatula around the edge to sort of break it down a little bit, then start swirling again.
  • You want some of the uncooked eggs from the top to get under the omelette. Don’t be afraid to break it up a little bit.
  • Repeat that process 2 or 3 times until the top really starts to set. Remove from heat and let your omelette sit for a few minutes until the top is completely (or almost completely) set. You can cover it if you want to speed things up a bit…

Delicately slide your omelette onto serving plate, (fold it in half while doing so if desired) and garnish with fresh (or dry, or toasted) unsweetened coconut shavings.

Savoury – Vegetable Omelette

Firstly, with Chi raw coconut water you will get real coconut water. Noting added. Nothing taken away.  So it means both the taste and nutritional content are unchanged. How we do that? Unlike other coconut waters that are heat pasteurised, our raw coconut is unheated. We use HPP ( High pressure processing) technology – a process that keeps the fresh attributes of the coconut water.

In addition, Chi raw coconut water is organic. Perfect, isn’t it?!

What are the benefits of drinking raw coconut water?

Many researchers have shown raw coconut water to be healthy for you.

Here are some benefits:

-Aids in weight loss

-Facilitate digestion

-Boost hydration

-Reduce blood pressure

-Rich in nutrients

And you can consume coconut water as much as you want.

What does it taste like?

We only use hand-picked young Nam-Hom coconuts – the tastiest variety of coconut in the world. What is remarkable about this variety of exotic coconut? They produce sweeter water.

Is yours pink?

Don’t worry,  it is just a natural occurrance and is due to active anti-oxidants found within coconut water. It is even a good sign that means that the level of antioxidants is high. As you know, antioxidants help to maintain good health and reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

So what are you waiting for? Go start drinking Chi raw coconut water…

And don’t forget you have just few days left to WIN A NUTRIBULLET AND A CASE OF CHI RAW ORGANIC COCONUT WATER.

Here are just some of the benefits that you will get from veggie juices:

  1. Instant energy due to the better absorption of the fresh vitamins and the vital minerals. It is specialy  good after workout!
  2. Weight loss – most nutritionists advise to drink vegetable juices for a healthy diet.
  3. It helps your digestion by cleansing your stomach and your intestines.
  4. Regulate your blood pressure.
  5. Help maintain your cholesterol level.
  6. Help your immune system thanks to the vitamins and minerals required to make your immune system stronger.
  7. Juices will also help to have a smooth, clear and hydrated skin.
  8. For those who don’t consume a lot of fresh vegetables, it is a convenient alternative to your 5 a day.

Going
RAW

We are proud to announce that you can now buy 100% RAW coconut water from Chi! We are so excited for you to taste this delicious product: totally untampered with –  Left as nature intended it to be left (perfect!). Available at OCADO, Whole Foods, Planet Organic with more stockists being added monthly.

FRESH – NO ADDED SUGAR – NO PRESERVATIVES – COLD-EXTRACTION – ORGANIC – NEVER HEATED – 100% PURE – RAW – NOT FROM CONCENTRATE.

So how do we get it?

The coconut water found within young green coconuts in Thailand is very easily altered when heated. That is why when you drink coconut water which is not raw, it does’t quite bring back that same memory of sipping coconuts on holiday – however refreshing and lovely it may be. However, Chi has found a way to keep the fresh coconut water in Thailand in its natural RAW form! We use high pressure processing to do this – keeping the coconut water cold at all times: from when the coconut is cracked open by our farmers to the moment you pick it up from the shelves in your closest store. High pressure processing allows the coconut water to have a longer refrigerated shelf life while also allowing all the natural flavours to remain exactly the same. We do not add any preservatives or heating to the product – it is simply simple! This means that the nutritional content is also unchanged.

Watch this video on how we make our coconut water:

Chi Organic Raw Coconut Water – No Gimmicks. No Celebrity Lifestyle to sell. from Serendipity Films on Vimeo.

Where does RAW coconut water come from?

Our coconuts come from a region called ‘Ratchaburi’ in Western Thailand where the rich soil and tropical climate offer the perfect environment for producing uniquely great tasting coconuts. The word Ratchaburi means “The land of the king” and the provence is located 80km west of Bangkok, bordering Burma. The soil is perfect for coconuts to grow here – with the Mae Klong River flowing through the centre of Ratchaburi town.  Hence why Thailand is renowned for producing the world’s best tasting coconut water.

Why go RAW?

The main reason to go RAW is for the taste – incredibly fresh and unique!  However, other reasons may be that Chi RAW coconut water is packed with naturally occurring electrolyte minerals including potassium, calcium and magnesium. We only use hand-picked young Nam-Hom coconuts – always harvested at the perfect moment for peak nutrition! We never mix the ages or varieties of our coconuts – giving a consistently fresh and pure taste.

Our RAW coconut water is also sustainable – as Chi trades fairly. We are contributing to the environmental impact of production: creating a sustainable balance between farming and wild ecosystems. Chi RAW coconut also works hand in hand with ‘Drop4Drop.org’ in order to deliver water wells to communities that need it most.

Why does RAW coconut water go pink?

This is a natural occurrence and it is due to active anti-oxidants found within coconut water. It is nature’s way of blushing!

The colour doesn’t change the taste, it is still so good.

Chi’s iced espresso

Chi Espresso Coconut Milk & Chi Chocolate Coconut Milk

Get fit
with Chi!

Want to get fit this spring in time for that lovely summer season? Chi can help you out and keep you motivated when trying to achieve your ideal summer body and state of mind!

Here is why:

1. Chi drinks are low calorie.

Switch that fizzy drink or juice for one of our delicious drinks this spring. Worried you’ll miss that sweet taste? Why not try our new RAW coconut water – bursting with a sweet but natural flavour yet only 70 Calories per 250ml per bottle.

Raw250

*Available in April at Whole foods and Planet Organic.

2. Chi drinks are hydrating.

When working out it is very important to keep your body hydrated in order for your metabolism to stay as high as possible. However, it is best to stay hydrated throughout the day – before and after exercise – rather than just drinking straight before you start working out. Here at Chi we would recommend our 1L of Chi coconut water for this all-day hydration. This way you can keep us in your fridge and reach for us whenever you feel de-hydrated.

1L-CHi-front

3. Chi products can encourage you to make healthier meals!

Breakfast is key to a healthy lifestyle. Why not try our Chi coconut milk in porridge? Porridge releases energy slowly throughout the day – meaning you’re less likely to snack before lunch. By using Chi coconut milk in your porridge it will also taste much creamier – meaning you might be able to resist that temptation of a maple syrup topping!

Coconut_Porridge20681

Our coconut oil is also perfect for making you lunch or supper lighter. Coconut oil can be used as a substitute in cooking just like olive oil or butter, but it is much healthier! The coconut oil also gives vegetables a great taste when used for frying or cooking… hopefully encouraging you to make more of them!

4. Chi drinks can be healthy and indulgent at the same time – making the switch to a healthy lifestyle all the more bearable!

Our Chi chocolate coconut milk sounds pretty tempting right?! Why not try it – it has that strong chocolatey taste yet has so many health benefits that you can feel indulged and revived all at once! Chi chocolate coconut milk 330ml is only 155 calories per serving and is sweetened naturally by coconut sugar. Our chocolate coconut milk is rich in vitamins & minerals. This is great for a healthy snack – key to speeding up your metabolism for weight loss!

5. Chi drinks can keep you energetic even when cutting down on sugar.

Although our products are low in sugar (containing no added preservatives or unnatural sweeteners) they can keep you awake and active when focusing on a new healthy lifestyle. Chi would recommend its espresso coconut milk – giving you a natural kick from the protein, good fats, fibre, vitamins B & C, potassium, calcium and iron within it! If that isn’t the perfect drink to power you through an afternoon we don’t know what is!

Try our products you will see the result;)

Chi’s collaboration with Work
– Well – Being

OUR COLLABORATION WITH WORK -WELL-BEING.

Chi coconut water was proud to support Work Well Being on the 13th of March for their first ever event!

WHAT IS WORK – WELL – BEING?

Louise and Abby are passionate & experienced practitioners and advocates of everything wellbeing! Both having many years experience within these practices has resulted in them establishing a network of the very best Wellbeing Warriors (teachers!) in London today.

Their belief is that there is a better way to work, we are working longer and harder than ever before, with time for our own personal wellbeing being pushed to the bottom of our to-do-list. It is time for employers to provide their staff something far more meaningful, wellbeing.

Work-Well-Being are on a mission to change the way we work, with the belief that wellbeing should be a core part of the working day, not something that individuals are forced to try and cram in during their few spare hours of an evening, or an often already full-packed weekend. Not only are the benefits of this huge to the individual, wellbeing is also a real business tool. There is no trade-off between living a well-rounded life and high performance; performance is actually improved when our lives include time for reflection, restoration and renewal. An environment where people are happy in their jobs and given the respect and freedom to be themselves will enable the best work and ideas to flourish.

The services that Work-Well-Being offer make it a whole lot easier for the workplace to offer wellbeing to their employees! They program the full day using their network of the very best teachers, manage all of the internal promotion of the event, manage all class sign-ups, provision of equipment & insurance and importantly evaluate the success & impact of the event to the workplace.

How Chi helped Work-Well-Being event

During Work-Well-Being’s event there where 2 yoga classes,2 meditation sessions an inspirational talk on How to Manage Work Stress and individual Health Coaching consultations. Chi happily sent over a load of coconut water to keep everyone hydrated and energized – the perfect drink to have at hand for these activities! Bircher muesli with

make your monday marvellous with
a coconut matcha latte!

We love a good matcha latte and especially when there is chi coconut milk involved, even more so on a monday morning when you need an energy boost. (Or hangover remedy) So to brighten up your monday morning here’s some information on matcha and how a coconut matcha latte can make your Monday marvellous. Oh yes and we’ve thrown in a quick recipe for your convenience, (we’re so kind!).

Although matcha powder comes with a hefty price tag it also comes with a hefty amount of nutrients, perfect justification to pop to your nearest health food store and grab a pot! Unlike green tea which is the brewed tea leaves of many varieties of tea leaf from China and Japan, matcha powder is specificaly ground from tencha leaves in Japan.

The tea bushes are grown and taken great care of during the winter and just before harvesting in May the bushes are covered from sunlight. This stimulates an increase in chlorophyl levels resulting in the leaves to be a darker shade of green. This, my fellow green gods and goddesses, is how matcha powder gets its nutrient potency. This darker shade of green causes a production of amino acids like L-thiamine.  This makes matcha perfect for repair and growth as it gives us a supply of ready available amino acids (think hair, skin, nails, muscles). Basically everything we need repairing to be feeling (and looking) amazing.

Screen Shot 2015-03-09 at 12.33.52

When we consume Matcha we consume the whole leaf as it is in powdered form. This means we get a fair share of amazing antioxidants like ECGg. Antioxidants are important as they can help prevent damage to our cells from oxidative stress and toxins we consume and produce in our body. Even better for cell repair, skin repair and long term beautifulness!

This combination of matcha, electrolyte and mineral filled coconut milk is brilliant. Drinking one of these babies regularly is a sure fire way to become the envy of your colleagues with your new annoyingly large amount of energy, just what everyone wants to see on a monday!

#ThisGirlCan – inspiring women everywhere
to be more active

This week we have been seriously inspired by #ThisGirlCan, a national campaign created by Sport England to celebrate active women everywhere. Their aim is to encourage other women to get involved in fitness, “no matter how well they do it or how red their face gets.

If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t seen the TV ad, tweets or billboards, then check out some of the great slogans they’ve been using:

You can also check out the TV advert here: #ThisGirlCan

Sport England has said that no models were used in the campaign, just women of all shapes, sizes and ages getting stuck into sport and exercise.

We think their approach has been spot on, so we decided to ask what our Instagram followers thought of the campaign and find out which sports and fitness bloggers inspire them to be fit, healthy and active.

“Sharing my journey to a healthier, fitter body helps to keep me on track and inspires my readers to achieve their goal body. Together we work to better ourselves and I love that sense of community.”

Chi’s Guide to
Dairy Free Eating

Have you recently discovered that you are lactose intolerant? Do you want to give up dairy for a healthier lifestyle? Are you wondering how on earth you’re going to live without chocolate and ice cream? Well don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with our “Guide to Dairy Free Eating.”

Becoming a “dairy free eater” may sound like the hardest thing in the world, but in 2014, there are plenty of options out there for people who cannot consume dairy, or who have decided to avoid it for health and ethical reasons.

Luckily, most supermarkets now carry a range of “free from” foods, which cater for both gluten and dairy-free diets. Although these “free from” sections are still quite small, it is a step in the right direction for dairy free eaters.

The best place to stock up on dairy free essentials is at stores like Planet Organic, Wholefoods or your local health food shop. They will usually carry a much wider range of “free from” foods, and will always have well-trained staff on hand to help with any queries you may have. There are also a number of great, online stores that offer a huge range of healthy brands, delivered right to your door. We particularly like Nature’s Healthbox (http://www.natureshealthbox.co.uk)

So, what should you add to your basket? Here’s some delicious, dairy free brands that we highly recommend:

The Lowdown on
Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil may as well be renamed “Nature’s Wonder Oil.” With over one hundred different uses, it is one of the most versatile health products you can get your hands on. For anyone who is unsure of where to start, here are just 5 of the most popular ways you can use it:

–       Cook with it – perfect for frying, baking and high temperature cooking
–       Eat it – add to porridge, coffee, smoothies or toast
–       Apply it – for luscious locks and smooth skin
–       Pull it – ideal for oil pulling which boosts oral hygiene
–       Spread it – add to crackers/rice cakes for a healthy, dairy free alternative

As a staple food item in some of the healthiest countries in the world, it is no wonder that new research suggests high quality coconut oil can aid fat loss, maintain a healthy heart and even push athletic performance.

GOOD FATS & MCT’s
The best way to understand Coconut Oil is to compare it to the Avocado, a similar plant-based food, with a high fat content that is considered highly nutritious. Come to think of it, coconuts and avocados could be related. Distant cousins, maybe!?

Good fat

Like the Avocado, Coconut Oil falls under the category “good fats,” which play an essential role in a well-balanced, healthy diet. We get our “good fats” from fish, nuts, seeds and oils.

Coconut Oil also contains Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) and reportedly has more than any other food in existence. MCTs, or medium-chain fatty acids as they are also known, are metabolized differently to longer-chain fatty acids that are found in foods like steak and cheese. MCTs are easily digestible and absorbed directly into the liver, increasing your energy expenditure and helping the body to burn other fats. Pretty nifty, huh?

A COCONUT A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY
Coconut Oil contains around 50 percent Lauric Acid, a type of medium chain fatty acid. When lauric acid is present in the body, it is converted into monolaurin, a monoglyceride compound that exhibits antiviral, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. It acts by disrupting the lipid membranes in organisms like fungus, bacteria and viruses, thus destroying them. Many people who regularly consume coconut oil experience less sickness.

BODY BUILDERS & ATHLETES
All over the world personal trainers and nutritionists are recommending Coconut Oil to their clients.  It is popular with athletes due to the increase in energy expenditure provided by the medium chain triglycerides. Coconut oil can also blunt appetite and stave sugar cravings making it a perfect addition to any athlete’s diet. Similarly, body builders can take advantage of the same benefits. It is also claimed that coconut oil can be used by body builders to boost testosterone levels, helping to maintain hard-earned muscle when getting “shredded” for a show. Additionally, the lower the carb intake in any athlete or body builder’s diet, the more important it becomes to NOT limit fat intake, in particular saturated fat.

ORGANIC. RAW. VIRGIN. COLD-PRESSED.
It is really important to buy unrefined, unprocessed coconut oil. Chi Coconut Oil is raw, unrefined, organic, cold-pressed and virgin. This means that it is never heated, never treated and never processed. What reaches you in the jar is pure coconut goodness.

Chi Coconut Oil

Now to let you in on a little secret… Did you know that there is absolutely no difference between “extra virgin” coconut oil and “virgin” coconut oil? “Extra virgin” is actually just a marketing term. The only place you’ll find a difference is in your Olive Oil, but you should probably replace that with Chi Coconut Oil anyway!
