How To Make Your Own
Coconut Lip Scrub At Home!

Sugar may not be good for you, but when it comes to summertime exfoliating it’s a must—especially for your lips. Starting a lip care regime will keep your pout fresh and kissable as you enter the cooler months, and the good news is that it’s as easy (and sweet) as pie to do.

  • Brown Sugar = Exfoliator
  • Organic Honey = Natural Healing Properties (Antiseptic)
  • Organic Coconut Oil = Nourishing/Moisturising

By exfoliating with a natural scrub, you’ll slough off that top layer of skin often left dry from the sun, exposing a new soft lip that allows for better penetration of hydrating products (like lip balm) and makes your favourite lipsticks go on smoother and last longer.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 2 tbsp of Brown Sugar
  • 1 tbsp of Organic Honey
  • Small glass container with lid (to store your lip scrub)
  • Bowl & spoon to mix the ingredients

Step 1: Making The Base

In your bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with 1 tablespoon of honey. Mix until you are left with a rich, thick, and SMOOTH consistency.

Step 2: Creating The Sugar Base

Add two firmly packed tablespoons of brown sugar to your base and mix until it is completely integrated and coated, forming a paste. Adjust the sugar-to-base ratio to achieve your desired scrub consistency.

Step 3: Storing Your Natural Lip Scrub

Transfer your delicious lip scrub into your glass container with lid. Make sure to label the jar and add the date so you can keep track of how long you’ve had it. And consider making it in small batches because homemade cosmetics lack the preservatives and don’t last as long. This lip scrub should last for approximately two weeks if you keep it refrigerated.

Step 4: Using The Lip Scrub

Before each use, let the scrub sit out and adjust to room temperature to soften up before applying to your pout. Using a generous amount, apply the scrub to your lips in a circular motion. Let it sit for 1-2 minutes and then remove with a warm washcloth.  Apply Honest Organic Lip Balm or your favourite moisturising lip treatment after each use to maximise the results of your freshly scrubbed lips.

The Importance Of
Massaging Your Face!

The face is full of nerves and pleasure points, so it makes sense that a facial massage is a desirable form of pampering. Give yourself a facial massage or visit a professional. Whether you are looking for a quick midday pick-me-up or a soothing escape, the luxury of massage is easily justified by some of its more practical benefits.

Get in a Better Mood

Facial massage decreases anxiety and can improve a negative mood, according to a study conducted by the User Science Institute. Psychological tests administered after 45 minutes of facial massaging showed significant improvements in both mood and anxiety levels, according to the 2008 study. A relaxing facial massage may be just what you need to reduce stress.

Massaging prevent Wrinkles

Daily stress often results in tension buildup in the muscles. Foreheads furrow and lines form between the brows and along the lip line. Gentle, routine facial massage can help relax these tight and drawn muscles, decreasing the lines that they form. Massage combined with a hydrating moisturiser can also help minimize lines and dryness.

See some examples down below that you can do on a daily basis!

The Deep-Cleansing Massage
Massaging an oil cleanser into your skin — instead of just rubbing it on and immediately rinsing it off — can increase its efficacy by as much as 30%. This technique also offers the same results as using an electronic facial brush by helping dissolve oil on the skin — without the risk of breaking capillaries or exacerbating rosacea.

The Plumping/Contouring/Lifting Massage
Backstage at fashion shows, you’ll often see models getting facial massages before their makeup is applied so their skin will look extra glowy under the lights. This technique can work just as well for you when you’re getting ready for a night out. It makes the skin look more plump and even-toned, and it temporarily reduces the appearance of fine lines.

Delicious Winter Inspired
Hot Drinks!

We think that winter is a great time and season for creativity and new beginnings. Whether you’re wrapped in a blanket on your couch or out playing in the snow, working behind a desk, there’s wintry inspiration all around us, and there will be always something to share with our lovely readers!

These are the hot drinks we favour at this time of year: soothing chocolate for gentle evenings at home and a warm spiced almond milk for when you feel a little under the weather.

Honey And Camomile Hot Chocolate.

Something for bedtime, this is also a good way to curb a sweet tooth after dinner. (You can even ad a little shot of dark rum if it takes your fancy!)

(Makes 2 cups)

  • 500 ml almond milk
  • 1 camomile teabag
  • 100g good chocolate, broken up
  • 2 tbsp honey
  1. Heat the milk in a saucepan with the camomile teabag. When it is just about to boil, reduce the heat and simmer for a couple of minutes.
  2. Take off the heat, remove the teabag and add the chocolate and honey. Ladle into cups and pop on to a little tray for bedtime.

Golden Turmeric Milk

This sunny yellow milk brightens us up when feeling under par. Try to have a little turmeric every day, usually in a tea; its healing properties have been widely celebrated. Allowing the milk to cool a little before you add the honey will stop the heat damaging the honey’s nutrients. You can also make a peppy morning version with a little grated ginger.

(Makes 2 cups)

  1. Bash the cardamom pods in a pestle and mortar and put them into a small saucepan with the milk, turmeric and cinnamon. Heat gently until almost boiling, no hotter – if you are using a non-dairy milk, it may split.
  2. Pour into a mug – or strain it if the cardamom seeds bother you – and, once it has cooled a little, stir in the honey. Make sure you don’t spill any, as the lovely yellow colour can be rather persistent.

What is oil pulling and
why you should do it

Have you ever heard of oil pulling? Did you ask yourself what it is and why people are doing it? No? Well, then this post will bring some clarity.

Oil pulling is a method to do mouth cleansing in a natural way. It is an ancient Ayurvedic healing practice and has been used in coconut producing countries for hundreds of years.

You can do oil pulling with different kinds of oil but it is mostly done with coconut oil. We at Chi also use coconut oil for our oil pulling, which is organic, raw, virgin and cold-pressed. It has a lot of benefits and is pleasant to the taste. Moreover, coconut oil has strong antibacterial properties, which is very advantageous when doing oil pulling.

sachets and package edited

You mainly do oil puling to receive a better oral hygiene and get rid of bacteria in your mouth. The method to do it is very simple and easy. You just have to swish the coconut oil in your mouth for around 20 minutes. Do this preferably in the morning before you eat or drink anything. After that, you spit it out into the trash or toilet. Don’t swallow it! The oil should look milky and be watery now. If it isn’t, you didn’t swish it long enough. You shouldn’t spit it into the sink as it contains all the toxins from your mouth. Furthermore, you don’t want to clog your sink drain. Afterwards, rinse your mouth with warm sea salt water, as it will kill any lingering bacteria. But that is optional. What you definitely have to do is to brush your teeth afterwards!

You not only receive a better oral hygiene by doing oil pulling. There are more benefits coming with it. Some examples are a better breath and better overall hygiene in the mouth, whiter teeth, the healing of bleeding gums, better skin or the detoxification of your body. But as already said, these are just some examples out of a lot.                                                                 Furthermore, coconut oil also contains a lot of vitamins that are easily digestible. It provides you with vitamin A, D, E and K.

If you want to have visible results, you should do oil pulling for at least two weeks. The Chi Oil Pulling kit is available in a two-week course, a four-week course or a six-week course. As you should do the oil pulling every day, the courses contain one sachet for every day. After a few days you will see the first results and you will notice the benefits.

sachets line edited

If you have never tried oil pulling before, you should now! We have listed the benefits and it is so easy to integrate it into your daily routine. Oil pulling is the natural and healthy way compared to all the other chemical methods, which are more harmful than helping. So if you want to give your body a treat, try oil pulling.

12 reasons to drink
Chi coconut water

Guest blogger Stephanie from Expert Home Tips is a big fan of our Chi drinks. Being passionate about food, fashion and lifestyle, she’s here to share 12 reasons why she is totally in love with coconut water – and why you should be too!

1) Chi coconut water is low in calories

Summer is well on its way and for many of us, that means cutting down on the calories a bit. Chi can help you get trim for your holiday. It’s much lower in calories than your average, store-bought drink, containing half the calories of orange juice (19 calories/100ml).

As Chi is also 100% natural, there are no nasties such as artificial colours and flavourings for your body to deal with. Pick up a bottle instead of your full-fat coke, and watch the pounds fall off.

2) Chi is high in fibre

The reasons to swap your soda for Chi just keep on coming.

A glass a day will help you work towards meeting your recommended fibre intake too. Fibre is essential for the digestion process, as it bulks up stools, allowing them to pass through the digestive tract more easily.

The recommended daily amount is around 30g for adults – a number Chi can help make achievable. Just 250ml will provide you with an impressive 7.5% of your RDA, compared with just 2% for the same quantity of orange juice.

As far as fibre is concerned, Chi coconut water comes out on top!

3) Chi is high in potassium

If you don’t know much about potassium, here’s a quick low-down:

Potassium is an electrolyte, required for the regulation of the body’s water level. It helps ensure you become neither dehydrated, nor retain excess water.

Chi’s high potassium content is one of the reasons people love drinking it as a sport’s drink. When we sweat whilst working out, we lose essential minerals along with water. A glass of Chi helps to replenish the fluids lost and rebalance the body.

Potassium has loads of other benefits too. It’s often used to treat migraines, cardiovascular health and constipation. With a 250ml glass containing 625mg of potassium, your 12.5% daily intake has never been easier to meet!

4) Chi coconut water is gentle on the stomach

Raw, organic and 100% natural – Chi’s is an ideal drink to soothe upset stomachs.

Chi contains loads of electrolytes and antioxidants inside each glass, helping to flush out toxins and rebalance the digestive system. Coconut water also contains tannins, which are known for reducing inflammation.

Stick to water and 100% natural coconut water and you should be feeling great again in no time.

5) No refined sugar

Now, I’m not saying coconut water is sugar-free. There are naturally occurring sugars in Chi, 3.71g/100ml to be exact.

These naturally occurring sugars are, however, completely different to the refined sugars you find in a can of pop. This is because fizzy drinks contain highly processed sugar, and little else. This sugar leads to a spike in insulin levels, leaving your hormones all over the place.

Chi’s, however, has a high nutritional value, including lots of dietary fibre. Fibre help the body absorb naturally occurring sugars more slowly, releasing regular energy over time.

6) Chi is high in magnesium

Magnesium plays a key role in so many of our bodies functions. Fall short on your recommended daily intake and you could experience muscle cramps, poor sleep and even anxiety.

Unlike fizzy drinks, which contain no magnesium at all, Chi is relatively rich in magnesium – a 250ml glass contains around 15% of your recommended daily allowance.

Chi could be the key to reaching your RDA of magnesium, supporting your body in over 300, complex enzyme reactions.

7) Chi could help lower your blood pressure

Worryingly, one in three adults in the UK has high blood pressure. It can happen to anyone, that’s why ensuring you live a lifestyle that actively prevents it is so important.

A balanced diet, including lots of fruit and vegetables (and Chi!), can help maintain a low blood pressure. Fresh, 100% natural produce contains plenty of potassium, which is key in regulating the effects on salt on the body.

Get enough potassium, and your helping your body to keep your blood pressure stable.

8) 100% natural Chi is extremely low in fat

The ‘fat debate’ has been going on for many years. Should we avoid them, or embrace them? And if the latter, which ones are the best? Well, the truth is that we need fats to live.

Fats provide us with an extra source of energy when all of our carbohydrates are used up. Besides exercise, this energy is also essential for growth, brain function, healthy skin, and much more.

So fats should indeed be embraced, but it’s not an excuse to overindulge. Excess fat consumption can lead to high cholesterol and other health problems. In order to avoid this, the recommended daily saturated fat allowance of 24g should be adhered to.

In order not to exceed this, it’s best to have a balanced diet of both fatty and low-fat foods. Chi contains few (0.2g/100ml) and only naturally occurring fats, making it a healthy addition to your diet.

9) Chi is an ideal cleanser & toner for sensitive skin

So we’ve heard all about the nutritional benefits of Chi, but did you also know it can be used on skin?

When used on the skin, coconut water is extremely hydrating, leaving skin looking plumped and refreshed. Being 100% natural, raw and organic it’s a gentle cleanser for sensitive or problem-prone skin.

If you want to see what Chi is really made of, try using it to remove makeup. It’s extremely gentle and soothing – and also much cheaper than beauty brands. Use by applying to coconut wool pads and sweeping over the face.

10) Chi coconut water contains vitamin C

Anything with the word ‘vitamin’ in front of it has got to be good. Chi contains generous amounts of Vitamin C, which has a wide array of health benefits.

Vitamin C works to boost our immune system, making the body more adept at protecting us from sickness. Externally, it’s essential for wound repair, helping our bodies to grow connective tissues that heal our cuts. Best of all, Vitamin C plays an important role in the production of mood-enhancing chemicals in our body – drinking Chi really will make you smile!

11) Chi coconut water gives back

One of the best things about Chi is that it’s 100% honest. What you see on the packaging is what you get – nothing but 100% raw, organic coconut water.

But Chi isn’t just ethical in the product it provides – it goes a step further. Working hand in hand with Drop4Drop to deliver water wells to underdeveloped communities in India and Africa, Chi like to give a little back.

By choosing Chi coconut water, you’re also helping those most in need across the world. Every carton you buy gives communities safe access to one of the most vital human needs – water.

Chi’s benefits are never ending. For your health, for your skin, for the environment and for other, less-fortunate people around the world, there’s no comparable coconut water in the UK.

12) Chi coconut water is available in different flavours

If you’re the type of person that gets bored easily, you’ll be pleased to know Chi has many different flavours to explore. From a Cold Brew Coffee & Raw Coconut Water to get you going in the morning to a 100% Pure Coconut Water & Pineapple for post-workout revitalisation, there’s a Chi coconut water perfect for every occasion.

Coconut inspiration
from Brazil

With the excitement of the Rio Olympics now a distant dream, we now reflect and put a spotlight on Brazil’s tropical and hearty cuisine. The idea of Brazil conjures up the dreamy picture of palm trees, sandy beaches and nothing other than coconuts! And so when visiting Rio, it is difficult to ignore the abundance of fresh coconuts, whether sunbathing on Ipanema beach or being a tourist high up at Christ the Redeemer. No wonder coconuts in all its forms feature in some of Brazil’s most iconic traditional dishes and drinks!

The coconut palm in Sanskrit is known as kappa vrisksha, translated as: ‘tree which gives all that is necessary for living‘. This is somewhat true in the fact that almost all parts of the coconut can be used in one way or another; the water, milk, flesh, sugar, oil and even the husks and leaves!

coconut-seeds

The extent of coconut’s multi use is seen in these pictures below!

Coconut shells can be used primarily as bowls, or even for wood furniture.

palmwood-furniture-6

Coconuts are known for their high nutritional content; rich in fibre, vitamins C, E, B1, B3, B5 and B6 and minerals including iron, selenium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous. The fat in coconuts are considered ‘good’ fats in the form of medium chain saturated fatty acids (MCFAs). Focusing on one fatty acid in particular, lauric acid, it is converted in the body into a highly beneficial compound called monolaurin – an antiviral and antibacterial compound that destroys a variety of disease causing organisms. Therefore the consumption of coconut in its many forms: coconut oil, coconut water, coconut milk or even coconut flour, is therefore incredibly beneficial for ones health and in fighting infections and viruses.

l_11680_coconut-milk

Coconut based products are especially popular with health enthusiasts, vegans and those that are lactose intolerant as coconut milk in particular is lactose free. Coconut milk is therefore a widely used as a milk substitute and diary alternative in baking.

Without further ado, we explore some Brazilian coconut recipes, some traditional and some with a modern twist!

Beijinho de Coco a.k.a Coconut Kisses

Coconut truffles

Balls of sweet goodness!

Beijinho-de-coco

Ingredients:

  • Sweetened condensed milk x1 can
  • Sweetened desiccated coconut 1/4 cup
  • Butter 1 tbsp
  • Desiccated coconut for decoration
  • Whole cloves for decorating

Step 1: Bring milk and butter to a simmer in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Continue to cook, stirring often, until the milk has reduced to half and thickened, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in the 1/4 cup coconut, and allow to cool a bit before pouring into a buttered bowl. Chill in the refrigerator until cold, about 2 hours.

Step 2: With buttered or oiled hands, form milk mixture into tablespoon-sized balls, and roll in coconut flakes. Stick a clove into each beijinho as decoration.

Quindim

Coconut flan

Baked desert made of egg yolks, sugar and ground coconut flakes

quindim-960x500

A favourite from the region of Bahia quindim is a glossy yellow sweet made with nothing more than eggs, sugar and coconut (with butter a common addition). Baked in cupcake-sized moulds, or large if you wish, the bottom is toasted and golden, dense with grated coconut, while the top is a smooth, firm custard that sticks pleasingly to the roof of the mouth.

Ingredients:

  • White sugar x1 cup
  • Shredded coconut x1 cup
  • Softened butter 1 tbsp
  • Egg yolk x5
  • Egg white x1

Step 1: Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)

Step 2: Mix the sugar, coconut, and butter in a bowl. Stir in the egg yolks and the egg white; beat until well combined. Pour the mixture into a 9 inch pie plate. Place the pie plate in a large roasting pan. Pour enough boiling water into the bottom of the roasting pan to reach about half-way up the side of the pie plate.

Step 3: Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown on top, about 30 minutes. Allow to cool completely before turning out onto a serving dish. Refrigerate until serving.

Pave

The Brazilan chocolate trifle

Layers of cookies filled with chocolate or fruit, lemon, coconut

47f5b5744913c698524ea820f181b78c

 Ingredients

For the chocolate layer

  • 20 ladyfinger biscuits
  • 2-3 Tbsp Cognac
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1.5 cups cocoa powder
For the cream layer
  • 2 cans sweet condensed milk
  • 4 cups milk (or use the sweet condensed milk’s can to measure)
  • 2 Tbsp corn starch
  • 4 egg yolks (strained)
For the whipped cream layer
  • 1 small container heavy cream
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract

Step 1: In a large pot, combine the sweet condensed milk and 3 cups of the milk.

Step 2: Dissolve the corn starch in one cup of milk and add to the pot. Cook that mixture over low to medium heat, stirring constantly, until it starts thickening.

Step 3: Separate a cup of the mixture and let it cool.

Step 4: Add the egg yolks to the cooled cream and return it to the pot. Cook until it thickens.

Step 5: Let it cool and pour into a 15×10 baking dish.

Step 6: Place the biscuits into a large bowl and the Cognac into another smaller bowl.

Step 7: Using your fingers, sprinkle the Cognac onto the biscuits.

Step 8: In the same pot you used for the cream, add 2 cups of milk and 1.5 cups of cocoa powder. Cook until it resembles hot chocolate. (It’s supposed to be a liquid mixture, and not a cream!)

Step 9: Dip the biscuits into the chocolate and place them on top of the cream. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Step 10: On the next day, make some whipped cream by mixing the heavy cream, the powdered sugar and the vanilla extract. Pour the whipped cream into the baking dish, creating a 3rd layer.

Step 11: Refrigerate for at least 1 more hour before serving.

Step 12: Grate or shave some chocolate on top of the pavê and serve cold.

Of all the thousands of fruits from the Amazon, açaí is the best known, thanks to its super-food status. Traditionally eaten by indigenous tribes for energy, the hard purple berry is also used in Amazonian cooking, as a sauce with fish. A clever marketing campaign in the ’80s thrust it into the spotlight as the energy snack of choice for surfers in glamorous Rio de Janeiro. Served as a sweet, gloopy, frozen sorbet, sometimes topped with granola and slices of banana, or whizzed up in juices, it can found in every café, bakery, juice bar and supermarket across the country.

Tip: add some desiccated coconut on top and serve in a coconut shell for that extra coco-nutty touch!

Amazing beauty tricks
with coconut oil!

We are all familiar with the multiple and highly beneficial ways in which coconut oil can be used; as a beauty product and as a healthy and delicious oil to cook with. A large range of beauty products can in fact be made at home using coconut oil as the primary ingredient and not much else. The result is a beauty product that is cheap, wholly organic and personalised to your own tastes. Here we reveal some of our favourite and innovative ways of using coconut oil in DIY recipes.

Coconut oil on its own has been a popular choice as an all round moisturiser. However regular users can sympathise with the effort that is required to apply coconut oil on, especially when it hardens in colder temperatures. The process is made more tedious by having to heat the coconut oil up before application. One solution is to therefore use coconut oil to make a moisturiser in a whipped or bar form:

Whipped coco-nutty body butter

You will need:

1/2 cup (preferably organic)

  • Coconut oil (solid)
  • Shea butter
  • Cocoa butter
  • Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon vitamin e oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of desired essential oils
  • KitchenAid or electric mixer of some sort

Step 1: Heat up the cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil until melted – preferably with a double boiler but if not a glass bowl over a pan of boiling water.

Step 2: Mix with a whisk and leave the mixture to cool in the fridge for one hour until firm

Step 3: Whip the mix on high speed (either in a KitchenAid or hand mixer) until the consistency is light and airy. Add essential oils and mix again.

Step 4: Empty the whipped mixture into a glass jar.

Note: A blender or food processor will not work on this oil recipe as it may warm the oil too much and prevent it from whipping up.

Sugar body scrub

img_1825

Using the whipped recipe above, just add one cup of brown granulated sugar (or equal to the amount of coconut oil) to turn your whipped body butter into a luxurious body scrub! Use this scrub for all over the body, foot, hand… everywhere!

Coconut oil lotion bar

You will need:

  • Mould – muffin tin
  • 3/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup pure beeswax
  • 1/2 cup shea butter
  • 10-15 drops of essential oil

Step 1: Heat oil and beeswax in a saucepan on low heat

Step 2: Add in the essential oils once melted

Step 3: Pour mixture into mold / muffin tin

Step 4: Let it cool and store at room temperature

Note: If you fill a cake tin you can make enough

Avo-nana hair mask

Make use of your overripe fruit and veg to repair any summer damage that your hair has endured. Move over argon oil…

You will need:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 (over)ripe banana
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil

Step 1: Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl and blend together until mixed
Step 2: Spread the mixture thoroughly over your hair and let it set for 20-30 minutes

Step 3: Rinse out with regular shampoo and conditioner

Tip: Add an egg yolk in the mixture if you want some extra protein

Note: If you have longer or thicker hair you may want to add extra coconut oil and s

Make the rinsing process somewhat easier by pressing the mixture through a sifter to remove any large chunks.

Coconut coffee scrub cubes

Here we have a slightly more enjoyable way of getting rid of cellulite, stretch marks and puffy faces in the morning.

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup fresh coffee grounds
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • Brown sugar for texture
  • Muffin tin or ice cube tray

Step 1: Microwave the coconut oil so that it is of a liquid consistency and combine the coffee grounds into one mixture

Step 2: Divide the mixture into the tin / ice cube trays and then freeze

Step 3: One frozen they can be popped out and kept in the freezer if they are not to be used immediately. Once in room temperature they will soften.

Eye cream

Make a simple eye cream with just vitamin E oil and coconut oil. Why vitamin Vitamin E oil? Because of its anti ageing benefits reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Antioxidant qualities also aid in fighting against everyday pollution that produces free radicals.

You will need:

  • Vitamin E oil (either capsule or liquid)
  • Coconut oil (solid)
  • Small container
  • Tooth pick or wooden skewer to mix

Step 1: Fill the small container with coconut oil (solid) and put it into the microwave for a couple of seconds until it starts to melt

Step 2: Poke a hole in the capsule and add to the melted coconut oil and stir the mixture together

Step 3: Keep the blend in the fridge so that it solidifies

Coconut oil shaving cream

Create your own affordable shaving cream free from any perfumes of preservatives! Coconut oil will help to prevent ingrown hairs, razor burns and general irritation when shaving.

You will need:

  • 3 tbsp coconut oil
  • 4 tbsp shea butter or aloe vera
  • 2 tbsp almond oil
  • 10-12 drops of your favourite essential oils / oil blend (peppermint is especially cooling)

Step 1: Mix the oils and shea butter together in a glass bowl and melt on low heat

Step 2: Add essential oils and then place the mix in the fridge to harden

Step 3: Whip with a mixer until the consistency is similar of to that of frosting

Here are some other beauty products that you can also make the list is endless! How about:

  • Eye cream
  • Sunscreen
  • Deodorant
  • Lip balm

70,000 commuters pass through Old Street Station every day who are tired, stressed and not at all present. Research shows that we’re one of the most affected European cities when it comes to transport disruption and as a result mental wellbeing is affected severely. Last year a survey of more than 5500 commuters in London, Rome, Barcelona, Berlin, Madrid and Paris found that some rate the worry and strain of the commute to work on a par with a relationship breakdown – and often worse than the job itself! This week-long takeover offers a real opportunity to alleviate the stress of daily London commuting and get more people involved in yoga.

What is oil pulling?

Oil pulling, also known as ‘gundusha’ or ‘kavala’, is an ancient Ayurvedic procedure for dental health that involves swishing oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for up to 20 minutes. This process draws out toxins from within the body to improve one’s overall health but primarily to encourage better oral hygiene.

Coconut oil is the most popular choice of oil because it has impressive antibacterial properties in addition to lots of easily digestible, fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, D, E and K. Vitamin A is great for building a strong immune system, vitamin D strengthens bones and teeth, vitamin E has antioxidant properties for the skin and vitamin K reduces blood clotting. Also, coconut oil has a nicer taste than other vegetable-based oils. Our range has a fresh minty flavour because it contains 1% organic peppermint oil so there is no need to worry about any nasty taste!

Chi white products

You should swish the oil around your mouth quite gently in order to avoid getting a stiff jaw. Some people new to oil pulling find twenty minutes to be a bit of a struggle and if this is the case why not try to keep the oil in your mouth for around 10-15 minutes and build this up as you become more used to the feeling. As you are swishing the product around your mouth the oil will double in size as it draws in saliva and toxins. When time is up, empty the contents of your mouth and rinse your mouth out with some warm water before brushing as you normally would.

How does it work?

When oil pulling, the oil in your mouth binds itself to the plaque on the teeth and therefore when spitting out the oil you are removing bacteria from your mouth. Oil pulling is a particularly efficient way to reduce this kind of bacteria because the plaque on your teeth is fat-soluble as opposed to water soluble. This means that the lipids must dissolve in fats, which is why coconut oil is the perfect remedy unlike other water-based products on the market.

Chi White sachets

What are the results?

Clinical trials carried out by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) have shown that the benefits of coconut oil pulling include:

  • Improved oral hygiene
  • The prevention of cavities and gingivitis
  • Reduced oral bacteria
  • Reduced plaque
  • Whiter teeth (Please remember that each person’s teeth will react differently to Chi White and that response times may vary)

‘Low fat’ products could be the
cause of Britain’s obesity crisis

A headline aired on LBC Radio Station this morning has suggested that the cause of Britain’s obesity problem could be that we have received incorrect dietary advice for decades. The National Obesity Forum and the Public Health Collaboration have produced a report stating that the nation’s beliefs concerning what makes a healthy diet are false. Although it has been assumed that low-fat diets are the key to good health, now commentators claim that fats are essential to a balanced lifestyle and do not encourage weight gain. High fat foods such as avocados are in fact beneficial, while the real culprits are processed foods labeled as ‘low fat’ that often contain hidden sugars to compensate in taste for removed fat.

low fat products contain hidden sugar causing obesity

Dr. Aseem Malhotra, founding member of the Public Health Collaboration, claimed that guidelines promoting low fat products are ‘perhaps the biggest mistake in modern medical history resulting in devastating consequences for public health’. Instead, he promotes the consumption of fats ‘to get slim’. Indeed, the BBC documentary aired in 2015 titled ‘The Truth About Sugar’ explored the great extent to which sugar is hidden in processed foods such as low fat ready meals. The show followed the journey of four volunteers who slashed their sugar intake in a bid to lose weight. The results were impressive: 3 of the volunteers lost almost a stone each.

Fiona Phillips sugar and obesity

Fiona Phillips, presenter of BBC Documentary ‘The Truth About Sugar’, highlights hidden sugar in ‘low fat’ products

Similarly, recently celebrity chef Jamie Oliver launched his ‘war on sugar’ through his campaign aiming to underline sugar as the leading contributor to health problems in the UK owing to its persistent presence in supposedly healthy options in supermarkets. He has shown great support for George Osborne’s agenda to introduce a tax on sugar to reduce obesity that is to be implemented in 2018.

Instead of choosing products branded as ‘low fat’ or ’low cholesterol’, it seems that the way forward is a balanced diet free of added sugars and enriched with whole foods including those high in healthy fats.

Deliciously Ella

Serves 1

Ingredients

2/3 of a mug of coconut water (200ml)

1 tablespoon of coconut yoghurt (I use a brand called Coyo)

A big handful of spinach

1 ripe banana

1 tablespoon of bee pollen (optional)

Method

Simply peel the banana then place everything into a blender and blend until smooth.

Screen Shot 2016-05-09 at 15.17.02

Madeleine Shaw

Serve 1

Ingredients:

1 whole Thai coconut

200g of blueberries or other berry

1 tsp of honey (optional)

1 tbsp of desiccated coconut

¼ tsp of cinnamon

½ tsp of fresh grated ginger

Method

Crack open your coconut and pour the water into your blender, then scrape out the flesh. I use a cleaver knife to whack it open but there are also more sensible (and safe) methods and tools to get it open.

Place the flesh, honey (if using), cinnamon, ginger and almost all of the berries (reserving a few for decoration) blend until smooth then top with the desiccated coconut and leftover berries.

This will keep on the fridge for a day or so. It’s kinda fun it turns into a jelly ☺ but best to drink it fresh.

Sally’s Baking Addiction

Serve 1

Ingredients:

1/2 cup plain coconut water

2 frozen ripe bananas, previously peeled & sliced

1 cup chopped pineapple (frozen or fresh)

1 cup chopped mango (frozen or fresh)

2 cups spinach or kale

1/2 avocado, sliced

optional: 1 Tablespoon ground flax or flaxseed oil

Directions:

Make sure you have a strong, powerful blender. I like this Ninja or this Vitamix.

Add all of the ingredients to the blender in the order listed. Blend on high for at least 3 minutes or until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the blender as needed. Add more coconut water if it’s too thick.

The essential vitamins for
a Healthy Winter!

During winter your immune system is more sensitive and weaker than the other seasons, and that’s why you get sick more often. These common winter sicknesses (flu, colds, sore throat) are caused by vitamins or minerals deficiencies. To spend a happy healthy winter, pop to your local  store to get all the essential vitamins & minerals needed. Each vitamin plays an important role in your body, improving your energy, boosting your vitality.

Check out our guide list!

Vitamin C

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.18.07

Vitamin C doesn’t prevent colds and the flu, but it can reduce the length and severity of symptoms. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant. This means it protects the body against disease including heart disease and cancer. It is vital for the production of collagen, used to build body tissue and bones.

Where to find it?

Fresh fruit and vegetables, citrus fruits, kiwi fruit, strawberries and cranberries are an excellent source of vitamin C. Green vegetables (cabbage, broccoli and beans) and potatoes all contain high levels.

Iron

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.20.32

Iron is essential for the formation of red blood cells which carries oxygen around the body. A good intake of iron is necessary for energy, intellectual performance and vitality. A lack of iron leads to anaemia – where the body is unable to transport oxygen around the body causing lethargy and listlessness. Excessive iron may damage organs.

Where to find it?

Red meat is a rich source of iron. Other sources include cereal products, bread, flour, eggs, beans, lentils and dried fruit. Taking Vitamin C alongside iron helps with its absorption.

Vitamin D

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.22.09

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin required by the body for the absorption of calcium, bone development, immune functioning, and alleviation of inflammation.

Where to find it?

This essential vitamin is only absorbed when the body is exposed to sunlight. However, if you are not able to meet this requirement by this natural source, then vitamin D can be found in  milk and cereals.

Magnesium

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.23.58

Magnesium is required for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps regulate blood pressure, maintains bone strength, and ensures a healthy immune system.

Where to find it?

Halibut, nuts, peanut butter, spinach, oatmeal, beans, lentils.

Vitamin E

Screen Shot 2016-01-27 at 14.26.19

Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant protecting cell membranes from damage, and is thought to protect against some cancers and heart disease.

 Where to find it?

Nuts and oil are an excellent source of vitamin E. Green leafy vegetables (broccoli, spinach and cabbage) and cereals are also rich in vitamin E

Raw coconut water

Screen Shot 2015-03-30 at 15.37.51

Also our raw coconut water is full of vitamins and minerals, to name a few our Chi raw coconut water include Chloride, Iron, as well as important electrolytes such as Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Sodium, and Phosphorous. In fact, the potassium content in coconut water is close to twice the amount in a banana.

Cut down on
sugar for 2016!

You know how bad it is to eat sugar but it’s hard to stop. The latest research has proved that sugar is more addictive than tobacco, more dangerous than alcohol, more fattening than fat. You may not be eating Oreos by the roll or guzzling cans of  Coke, but that doesn’t mean sugar’s absent from your diet. Nowadays added sugar is everywhere even in a food that doesn’t  taste sweet such as bread, sauces or crisps. In this article we will give you all the tips to eat less sweet food!

Screen Shot 2016-01-08 at 12.20.33

Sugar  is an addiction like cocaine! It can be really hard to stop eating it!  first we have to understand why? If you’re addicted to sugar, there is  an emotional component. You’re craving and overindulging in sugar for a reason – you may be eating sugar to care for your emotions, to manage stress, or to care for your emotional, psychological or relational needs.

So now lower your sugar intake with these 8 easy ways:

1. Read the label

You will realise how often sugar is included to foods. Ingredients are listed in order of how much exists in the product, so if sugar is  near the top, that’s a red flag.

2. Don’t look for just the word ‘sugar’

Sugar hides under several sneaky names, including high fructose corn syrup, dried cane syrup, invert sugar, molasses, sucrose (or any word ending in “-ose”), brown rice syrup, honey, and maple syrup.

3. Buy the right products

Once you know where sugar hides, you can start making changes. Buy foods labeled “no added sugar” or “unsweetened.”

4. Take your time

In cutting down on sugar takes time. As we said sugar is like a drug so the beginning will be hard but the easiest way is reduce your consumption of sugar. If you normally put two packets of sugar in your coffee, for instance, try one for a week, then half, and finally add only a splash of milk.

5. Protein,protein…

Studies showed that sugar doesn’t cause proper satiety but it does make you hungry. So to avoid any craving, the best things to do is:

  • Eating breakfast every morning
  • Including fat and protein in your meals
  • Eating regular meals
  • Drinking more water

6. Sugar free, no calorie…?

Be careful don’t be tempting to buy the products with sugar free or no calorie write on it. The processed food manufactures are clever instead to use normal sugar they use aspartame or other substitute but they are even worst. When you eat something sweet, your body expects calories and nutrition, but artificial sugars don’t give your body those things.

7. Add flavours to your meals

Adding flavours will help you to eat less carbohydrate foods. Skip the flavored oatmeal and add a sweet kick with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.

8. Don’t drink it

Even drinks that are considered healthy can contain more of the sweet stuff than you’re supposed to have in an entire day. Case in point: “enhanced” waters (eight teaspoons per bottle), bottled iced teas (more than nine teaspoons per bottle), energy drinks (almost seven teaspoons per can), bottled coffee drinks (eight teaspoons per bottle), and store-bought smoothies (more than a dozen teaspoons—for a small).

9. Indulge yourself

It’s okay to have sometime a little treat but it needs to be occasionally.

NO ADDED SUGAR – NO PRESERVATIVES – NEVER HEATED

Detox your
body

Going back to work after the Christmas break is pretty  hard.  Feeling tired, dont’ have enough energy? Don’t worry we are all feel like that. After few days enjoying some rich foods, sleeping late… There is no question your body is tired, we just need to get back our healthy habits.  The best way to do that is to detoxify your body  because detoxification helps the digestion, boost energy levels, skin cleansing… To name a few. So now let’s find out how to do it!

Screen Shot 2016-01-06 at 13.30.57

1. What food to avoid?

  • Alcohol
  • Cigarettes
  • Milk products (except ½ cup unsweetened yoghurt with acidophilus each day)
  • Sugar, honey, maple syrup, artificial sweeteners
  • Coffee
  • Grains: wheat (bread, biscuits, cakes, pasta), rye, barley, oats, spelt and rice
  • Dried fruit

2. What’s the food to enjoy?

  • Fruit: any and all fresh fruit
  • Vegetables: any and all fresh vegetables
  • Fish: fresh, canned in water or olive oil
  • Lean red meat, chicken (without the skin). Limit to two servings per week.
  • Legumes: dried or canned, such as kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils
  • Eggs: preferably organic
  • Olive oil (preferably extra virgin), Coconut oil (unprocessed)
  • Nuts: raw unsalted almonds, walnuts, macadamias and cashews
  • Seeds: raw unsalted sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds
  • Green tea, white tea, weak black tea (decaffeinated)

3. Lemon Water

Add lemon to your water through out the day. The acid in the lemons assist the cleansing process. Citrus fruits, such as lemons, contain a pure concentrated form of citric acid. Citric acid works like bleach on fat. Due to its acidity and high ph, citric acid is able to actually penetrate and break down fat molecules. Try to drink one to three litres of water per day!

4. Best advice to detox

Exercise: During detox aim to exercise for one hour daily. Try to do intense exercises that makes you sweat.

Raw foods:  Aim to cut out the cooking process and eat mainly raw foods. Raw foods contain more nutrients and enzymes.

Chew: Aim to chew each mouthful of food 10 to 12 times before swallowing.

Guilt free
Christmas dessert

Christmas is nearly approaching, we are already starting to eat chocolate, cookies… The festive season is usually associated with gaining weight, but this year it won’t be the same! The food that will destroy your diet the most is dessert,  we have gathered some healthy dessert recipes that will indulge your craving for a Christmas sweet. You can tell us thank you;)

We have to start with a chocolate recipe, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without chocolate. Eating chocolate can be good for your health, it improves your cardiovascular health. This is because chocolate, particularly dark chocolate with 70% or more cocoa , contains flavonoids. However the high fat and caloric content of chocolate can counteract these benefits by causing weight gain if regularly eaten in large amounts. Also it’s better to avoid any of milk chocolate or white chocolate (high in sugar and fat).

Fruity Chocolate bar

Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 14.23.15

@givingtreesnack

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces good quality, dark chocolate (70-80%), very finely chopped
  • 1 cup assorted  Giving Tree fruits, large pieces roughly chopped

Directions

Gently melt chocolate on the lowest possible heat setting. Stir regularly, removing from heat as needed. The goal here is to keep the temperature under 90 degrees, be patient, keep stirring, and even with the heat on a low setting the chocolate will melt eventually.

Once melted and smooth, pour chocolate onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread into an even layer (it will not cover the entire pan, just spread it until it’s as thick as you want your final bark to be).

Sprinkle evenly with Giving Tree fruits. Let dry, uncovered at room temperature, for 1 to 2 hours or until set. Break into serving size pieces.

Because of the nature of freeze-dried fruit, this particular bar is best enjoyed within a day or two, as the fruit will begin to soften once exposed to humidity. The bar is good for up to a week, however, the fruit just might be a bit softer after a few days out in the open.

A traditional dessert that nobody can resist is the apple pie… with less sugar.

Apple Pie

Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 14.35.54

Step 1. Prepare the pastry
In a food processor, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons coconut palm sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add 3 tablespoons cold, unsalted butter (cut into 1/4-inch pieces); pulse until large flakes form. Add 7 table-spoons trans fat-free shortening and pulse until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Sprinkle 1/3 cup cold water over the mixture, about 2 tablespoons at a time, tossing with a fork to mix. Roll the pastry into 2 balls, one slightly larger than the other. Flatten into 3/4-inch thick disks on separate sheets of plastic wrap. Wrap and refrigerate for 45 minutes.

Step 2. Make the apple filling
Peel, core, and slice 5-6 apples, enough to make 6 1/2 cups. Add 3 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Toss well; set aside.

Step 3. Assemble the pie
Preheat oven to 400º. Place larger half of chilled pastry on a 12-inch sheet of plastic wrap. Dust dough with flour and roll into a 12-inch circle with a floured rolling pin, then invert over a 9-inch pie pan. Peel off plastic and gently tuck pastry into pan, letting edge drape over sides. Lightly moisten upper edge of dough with a damp pastry brush. Transfer filling to pie shell. Roll other half of pastry into an 11-inch circle on plastic wrap. Invert over filling, then peel off plastic. Pinch edge to seal; trim excess.

Step 4. Bake till golden
Create decorative edge on crust with fork. Slit top pastry for steam vents. Brush top of pie with milk and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar. Bake for 20 minutes on center oven rack, shield-ing edges of crust with foil. Reduce heat to 375º; continue baking until the pie is golden brown and juices bubble through at least one vent, another 30 minutes. Insert wooden skewer into pie; there should be no resistance. Transfer pie to cooling rack and cool at least 1 hour before serving.

Cranberry Jam tart
Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 14.44.05

@coconutandberries

No-Bake Cranberry Jam Tarts

  • 1Cup Almonds
  • 1/2Cup Rolled Oats (not quick-cooking)
  • 3/4Cup Soft Dates
  • Pinch of Salt

Quick Cranberry Jam:

  • 1 1/2 Cup Fresh OR Frozen Cranberries
  • 2T Maple Syrup
  • 2T Coconut Sugar
  • 1/4C Orange Juice
  • 1/2C (approx) Water
  • Zest of half an orange
  • 1/2t Vanilla Extract

Using a food processor, blitz the almonds and oats together to form a fairly fine flour. Add the salt and the dates and process until you have a thick mixture which holds together when pinched between finger and thumb. You may need to add a couple of extra dates if it’s too crumbly.

Divide mixture between the 12 holes of a shallow cake/tartlet tin and press firmly in the base and up the sides to form 12 neat tart shells.

Refrigerate or freeze until ready to fill.

For the jam, place all ingredients except vanilla in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer. Allow to simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, stirring, until the cranberries have all popped and the jam has thickened up. Pour into a jar and refrigerate until cool. (I left mine chunky but blend with an immersion blender if you prefer yours smooth)

Run a knife around the edges of the tart shells to loosen them and pop them out of the tin. Fill each with a couple of teaspoons of the jam.

Serve at room temperature

How to get a
flat belly quickly?

Who doesn’t dream of  having a flat belly? Most people are obsessed with their belly even at Chi HQ. To have a flat belly depends really on what you eat and how many time you workout during the week. So in this article you will find out how to get your flat belly in a short time.

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 11.58.52

What to eat? What food to avoid?

The first piece of advice that we can give you is to avoid as much as you can sugar. This will keep insulin levels low and also keep levels of glucagon high. Glucagon plays an active role in allowing the body to regulate the utilisation of glucose and fats. This hormone, is the best friend you could ever have in the struggle for a flat belly! The closer to zero grams of sugar you consume, the lower your insulin and the higher your glucagon levels.

Salt can make your tummy bloat also so try using natural sea salt or kosher salt, which is lower in sodium.

The best flat belly menu

Breakfast: A slice of whole-wheat bread with natural peanut butter and 1 cup of your favourite berries or a nice porridge full of vitamins.

Lunch: Spinach salad with sliced avocado, grilled firm tofu, and cherry tomatoes, drizzled with a little olive oil and fresh lemon juice.

Dinner: Grilled salmon, a roasted sweet potato, and sautéed asparagus with olive oil and garlic.

Snack: A cup of fat-free yogurt with 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds.

Tip 1: To prevent bloating, chewing is the best tip! Chew food until it is like applesauce in your mouth. Digestion begins in the mouth, and without proper chewing, food is not well-digested.

Tip 2: Eating portion-controlled meals that include whole-grain foods throughout the day is the best way to eat for a flat belly.

How many days per week should I exercise?

Exercising is the best way to have a healthy way to live.  To get your flat belly of your dream you have to focus on abs exercises.

But you should first start your workout by cardio exercises. They will heat up your core temperature and improve circulation, both of which will aid in acquiring a flat stomach. Strive for at least 30 minutes a day minimum.

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 14.41.45

And then your can simply do the crunch abs. You will have a flat stomach in no time!

Cold
remedies

As the day are getting colder, you don’t know how to dress with the temperature changing . One day it’s warm another day it’s cold… The perfect season to get a cold! At Chi HQ  we all had a cold, sneezing a hundred times per day, blowing your nose until it becomes red. Want to know how to get through your cold quickly? Your doctor can’t do much to cure it. However, some foods and drinks can cut a cold short!

If you want to know what you should eat or drink during a cold, this article is for you;)

1. What to eat?

Lemon and orange

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 16.11.02

Lemon and orange are full of vitamin C, which may help shorten a cold and work as a natural decongestant. Aim for 500 mg of vitamin C four times a day.  Other good sources of vitamin C include strawberries, tomatoes, and broccoli.

Soup

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 16.15.59

Hot soup raises the temperature in your nose and throat, creating an inhospitable environment for viruses that prefer cooler, drier climes.

Hot peppers

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 16.19.32

Hot chili peppers contain capsaicin, the compound that gives them their kick and acts as a decongestant to help relieve a stuffy nose. Can’t stand the heat? Mild bell peppers can help, too. They don’t have capsaicin, but they’re full of vitamin C.

Garlic and ginger

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 16.23.37

During cold and flu season, one popular folk remedy is to eat a spoonful of raw, chopped garlic cloves – or even to gnaw right on a fresh clove! Not excited to eat raw garlic?  You can try to put some in your vegetable smoothie or just make some toast with it and add some olive oil.

What to drink?

Hot tea

Screen Shot 2015-10-22 at 12.26.14

Drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated during a cold, and make sure they’re hot. Black tea helps soothe a sore throat and chase away the chills with a good dose of virus-fighting interferon. Add some honey and a squeeze of lemon for vitamin C.

Prevent Cancer with Chi
Raw coconut water!

Nowadays more and more people are fighting cancer than ever before. Hundreds of  thousand people are diagnosed  with cancer every year in the UK. There are over 200 different types, each with its own symptoms, methods of diagnosis and treatment.

Several researchers claim the health properties of coconuts are numerous,  including its ability to prevent cancer, how wonderful is that?! Coconut water is amazing at getting rid of the symptoms and damage done by chemotherapy. It is an electrolyte, it oxygenates the blood, it restores the ANC count, white blood count, haemoglobin, platelets, etc. As if that weren’t enough, because it is an anti-microbial, it can also help to reduce microbes inside cancer cells and aim to revert them into normal cells. In other words, it can be a fighting force of cancer treatment!

Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 14.28.31

Sounds too good to be true?

You have to keep in mind that current research is too preliminary to confirm. But with all the benefits coconut water contains we are really optimistic.

Note:  you must use fresh “young coconuts” and extract the coconut water.

For cancer prevention and overall good health, there is no substitute for the three basics: an overall healthy diet, staying a healthy weight, and daily physical activity.

What are
Superfoods?

The last few years, we’ve seen a lot of foods labeled ‘superfoods’, but what are superfoods? There is no legal or medical definition. It’s generally accepted that superfoods contain high levels of much-needed vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. Eating them may  help prevent diseases  and they make you healthier and aid weight loss too.

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.12.06

Here is your 10 best superfoods:

1. ACAI

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.16.01

The acai berry contains antioxidants, substances that fight harmful molecules, known as one of the few fruits with oleic acid—the same heart-healthy fat in olive oil.

2. ALMOND

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.22.27

Almonds are rich in monounsaturated fats; much research now links this type of fat with a reduced risk of heart disease. These nuts are one of the richest sources of vitamin E, which help to protect against UV light damage and Alzheimer’s disease.

3. CACAO

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.26.29

Who’d have thought?! Raw chocolate contains many important vitamins and minerals including:

  • Magnesium, and other essential minerals including calcium, sulfur, zinc, iron, copper, potassium, and manganese
  • Polyphenols called flavonoids, with antioxidant properties
  • Vitamins: B1, B2, B3, B5, B9, E
  • Essential heart-healthy fat: oleic acid a monounsaturated fat
  • Protein
  • Fibre

4. GREEN TEA

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.31.32
Green tea contains B vitamins, folate (naturally occurring folic acid), manganese, potassium, magnesium, caffeine and other antioxidants, notably catechins.
5. COCONUT
Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.33.51
Coconut contains properties that can prevent, or even cure, a wide range of ailments from heart disease to Alzheimer’s. Especially coconut oil which has so many benefits such as:
  • Protects against heart disease by increasing good cholesterol and lowering the ratio of bad and good cholesterol.
  • Helps treat malnutrition because it is easy to digest and absorb.
  • Kills disease-causing bacteria, fungi, yeasts and viruses because of the antimicrobial effects of its fatty acids.
  • Helps diabetics by slowing sugar release into the bloodstream.
  • Prevents strokes and brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
  • Boosts metabolism and increases energy because it is more likely to be burned as fuel than stored as body fat.

Our raw coconut water  is also rich in antioxidants and nutrients too.

6. SALMON

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.42.41

Salmon is a superfood because it’s high in omega-3 fatty acids, a type of fat that seems to decrease the risk of heart disease.

7. KALE

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.45.32

The health benefits of kale go well beyond providing a truckload of vitamins and minerals; this superfood is packed with phytonutrients such as glucosinolates and flavonoids as well. Thanks to its broad nutritional profile, kale is thought to help fight cardiovascular disease, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis; to prevent several types of cancer and pre-mature aging of the skin; and to promote the health of the urinary tract.

8. QUINOA

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.49.06

Often referred to as the supergrain, quinoa is high in fibre and high-quality protein. In fact, it contains more protein than any other grain while also packing in iron and potassium.

9. LENTIL

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 15.53.15

Lentils are rich in complex carbohydrates, a nutrient that boosts the metabolism and helps the body to burn fat. They are an excellent source of fibre, which can help reduce cholesterol levels. Lentils are also an outstanding source of folate and magnesium.

10. GREEK YOGURT

Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 16.04.13

Yogurt is actually cultured milk that is thickened by healthy bacteria. Lactic acid is produced and this process thickens the yogurt and creates the tart flavour. It can help to maintain a healthy digestive tract, as well as reduce high blood pressure and promote a healthy heart.

Organic
September!

This September, the Soil Association is holding the “Organic September’. This initiative is to understand the impact of buying organic products.  The buying decisions you make are simple but powerful! Small changes can make a big difference. We also think that it’s so important to make the right choice  by buying organic. But, why should we buy organic?

COesjsSWsAA2PNP.jpg-large

  • Avoid chemicals

Eating organic is the way to avoid all the chemicals in your fruit and vegetables.

  • Better taste

You will taste the difference between an organic product and a non-organic product.Try it!

  • Preserve your ecosystem

Organic farming supports sustainability. Preservation of soil and crop rotation keep farmland healthy, and chemical abstinence preserves the ecosystem. Insects, frogs, birds, and soil organisms are able to play their roles in the ecology life, and we are able to play ours, without interference or compromising.

  •  Reduce pollution

Agricultural chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers are contaminating our environment, poisoning our precious water, and destroying the value of fertile farmland. Certified organic standards do not permit the use of toxic chemicals in farming and require responsible management of healthy soil and biodiversity.

  • Keep our children and our future safe

Spending money in the organic sector is a direct vote for a sustainable future for the many generations to come.

So what are you waiting for? Make a small change to your everyday shopping.

Tomato Basil  Quiche

Screen Shot 2015-09-14 at 12.40.07

INGREDIENTS

 Healthy crust

  • 3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1/3 cup Chi coconut oil
  • 5 tablespoons cold water

Filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 cup fresh corn
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • handful basil leaves

Method

  1. To prepare crust: Combine whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper in a large bowl. Make a well in the center, add oil and water and gradually stir them in to form a soft dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  3. Roll the dough into a 12-inch circle on a lightly floured surface. Transfer to a 9-inch pie pan, preferably deep-dish, and press into the bottom and up the sides. Trim any overhanging crust. Line the dough with a piece of foil or parchment paper large enough to lift out easily; fill evenly with pie weights or dry beans. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil or paper and weights. Let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes or up to 1 hour.
  4. To prepare filling: Whisk eggs and milk in a medium bowl. Sprinkle half the cheese over the crust, then layer half the tomatoes evenly over the cheese. Sprinkle with corn, thyme, 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper and the remaining 1/4 cup cheese. Layer the remaining tomatoes on top and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pour the egg mixture over the top and add handful basil leaves.
  5. Bake the pie until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 40 to 50 minutes. Let cool for 20 minutes before serving.

INGREDIENTS

Filling

  • 2 teaspoons Chi coconut oil
  • 2 cups diced onions
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt plus 1/4 teaspoon
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 3/4 cup corn
  • 1/2 cup quartered cherry tomatoes

  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup low-fat milk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Toss with a fork until evenly moist; if the mixture seems dry, add up to 1 more tablespoon water. Knead the dough in the bowl a few times—the mixture may still be a little crumbly—then firmly press into a disk. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 190 C . Line a pie dish with shortcrust pastry, cutting off any excess and pinching the edges.
  4. Spread the caramelized onions in the bottom of the crust. Layer corn, tomatoes and jalapeños over the onions. Top with cheese. Whisk eggs, egg whites, milk, sour cream, pepper and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Pour the mixture into the crust.
  5. Bake the quiche until puffed and firm when touched in the center, 40 to 50 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. To serve, cut into 8 pieces.

Office
WorkOut!

If you have an office, you already know how hard is to exercise at your work place. Office spaces are set up to require little movement, you are in front of your computer, sitting all day. This has a huge impact on your health, it can increase your weight, also increase the strain on your back, wrists, eyes and neck. Now it’s time to fix that!

Today Chi team will give you all the keys to improve your health at your work. You won’t need gym clothes, or even a shower. We’ll give you some easy exercises to do anywhere in the office.

1. First take the stairs anytime you can

ThinkstockPhotos-80719381-stairs

2.   Correct your posture at your desk

good-bad-posture

Your back needs to be straight, your shoulders back, and the top of your monitor should be level with your eyes. If you have to look down or up, then you need to adjust the height of your screen. Also keep your legs bent at the knees so that the knees are only slightly higher than your hips. Your feet should be flat on the floor or on a step stool of some sort.

3.  Stretch as much as you can during the day

4. Exercise while sitting

  • Start with feet flat on floor.
  • Sit tall at your desk.
  • Hold your abdominal muscles tight.
  • Extend one leg until it is level with your hip.
  • Hold for ten seconds

  • First try to lift the table.
  • Put your hand under the table.
  • Press up against the table.
  • Continue until your muscles are tired.
  • Do this one hand at a time or both together.

Next, push the table into the floor.

  • Put hand on table, palm down.
  • Press down as strongly as you can.
  • Stop when your muscles are tired.
  • You can do this one hand at a time or both together if it looks more natural.

5. Change your chair for a ball

Protect Your Skin from the
sun with Coconut Oil

The sun is shining! What you want to do is to go out and tan.  Especially in summer  – you want to get a sun-kissed glow but without the sun damage! There’s no denying that most people look healthier when they are tan. However, as we all know, UV radiation is dangerous for our skin. Skin can develop freckles, rashes and, over time, UV radiation can  accelerate skin ageing and cause pigment changes commonly known as ‘age spots’. It can also cause changes in the skin cells, which may lead to skin cancer.

At Chi HQ we have all the best tips that you need to know before going on vacation. First, let’s talk about the must have during  summer:  sunscreen.

How to choose your sunscreen?

Selecting a sunscreen depends on many factors such as how sensitive your skin is to burning, how dry or oily your skin is. If you have fair skin that burns easily you should choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF 50+.  If you have a skin that tans readily you could choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with intermediate SPF 15-20+. And If you have darkly pigmented skin and do not suffer heavily from sunburn, you need a sunscreen with low SPF 8-15+.

Sunscreen-for-face-1

How to use it?

It is extremely important to use sunscreens correctly to achieve the best protection.

  • Apply sunscreen liberally to all sun-exposed areas so that it forms a film when initially applied.
  • It takes 20-30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin and it can be rubbed off very easily, so apply it at least half an hour before going out in the sun.
  • Re-apply sunscreen every 2 hours if staying out in the sun for more than an hour during the day.
  • Re-apply immediately after swimming, excessive sweating, or if rubbed off by clothing or toweling. This should be the case even if the product claims to be “water resistant”.

What are the alternative of the sunscreen?

ee7541371ff13b0e0c6c5f7b8967eadd

You won’t believe it, but Chi Coconut Oil can be used as a sunscreen. Native pacific islanders have been using coconut oil sunscreen for thousands of years.  It is the best way to get a healthy tan and Vitamin D. It’s a natural sunscreen – it blocks about 20% of UV rays when applied.

But you have to keep in mind that as dermatologists will tell you  ‘no tan is a healthy tan’ (hard as it is to resist!)

How to heal your sunburn?

Sunburn often leads to dehydration, which can cause headaches. So skip the margarita and opt for a massive glass of  Chi Raw coconut water, super-hydrating.

Screen Shot 2015-07-01 at 12.00.54

Also you should hydrate your skin, be sure to apply lotion to your body including the sunburned area.  You can use Chi Coconut Oil as well!

Drop4Drop Clean Water Project
for the Vadapada Community

We are delighted with the update from the charity we support, Drop4Drop, on the news that the clean drinking water project for the community in Vadapada, has now officially been completed.

Vadapada is an area in Umarpada Taluk in Surat District of Gujurat, home to 450 people. We are over the moon that with our collaboration, we were able to change the lives for many of these people in the community. In rural areas of India, water resource is a major crisis and for the large population of people living in these areas, planned water resources tends to get left out. This is a major concern and results to poor and difficult accessibility to clean water supply. With our support, we have made this dream of having clean and easy access to water, a reality to this community.

Mrs Bhagyashri Sandesh Taral, 27 years old from Vadapada:
‘“Before this, I used to wake up early in the morning to walk 1 km to collect water. So, every day I start my farm work late and so return home in the evening late too. Now I am relaxed, I can access enough water near my home and this saves me so much time.”
It is a pleasure that we can make a change to so many people’s lives and this makes the team at Chi very happy! Our goal is to continue working on these projects to help improve more peoples lives living in these rural communities.

The natural way to
whiten your teeth

Have you always wanted to have perfect white teeth? You’ve tried all the whitening toothpastes and strips out there in the shops, in hopes for your teeth to whiten but they have been no use. You’ve still remained disappointed with the results and may have even damaged your teeth as a result. There are loads of expensive teeth whitening products, but what you are missing is that many of these that are ‘natural’ are Coconut Oil based. At Chi HQ we believe the solution is simple. Everything natural has amazing benefits, and that starts with our Chi Coconut Oil. Instead of buying teeth whitening products, you can simply use our Chi, it’s a pure genius!

How does Chi Coconut Oil do this?

Coconut oil is a natural remedy used to clean and detoxify your teeth and gums. This is called ‘oil pulling’ which the lauric acid found in the coconut oil removes the naughty plaque that makes our teeth go yellow. This doesn’t give you instant whitening but gradually over time you will see a difference.

Directions

All you have to do is spoon out 1 tbsp of Chi Coconut Oil (or less) and push, swish and ‘pull’ the oil through and around your teeth for 10-15 minutes so it is coated. After this time, rinse all the chi coconut oil out with water and brush your teeth with mint toothpaste.

A breakfast bowl
of summer

Adding lots of fresh summer fruits and juicy flavours into your breakfast is the perfect way to give you a taste of the tropics. So Instead of the usual cereal and milk why not swap it with some of these quick and easy ideas.

STEP 1: The Base – Choosing the Smoothie

Smoothies are a great alternative to milk, with a sorbet taste, natural sugars and an awesome cleanser to the body; you can use this as a base. Here are some summer bursting smoothie tips using some of our Chi products:

Choco-Raspberry Heaven:

 Strawberry Mango Delight:

  • 5-6 strawberries, frozen or fresh
  • 1.5 cup mangoes, frozen or fresh (about 2 medium yellow mangoes)
  • (1/2) cup Chi Coconut Milk
  • up to (1/2) cup water

Berry Purple Power (Serves 2):

  • 1/2 cup frozen raspberries (or fresh)
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries (or fresh)
  • 6 strawberries (large, fresh preferred; frozen is OK)
  • 1/2 cup Chi Raw Coconut Water
  • 1/2 cup greek yogurt (vanilla)
  • 1 tbsp honey (or to taste, optional)Screen Shot 2015-05-29 at 12.36.42

Step 2: Choosing the MAIN topping

Now it’s time to pick some toppings you could add to your smoothie bowl!

  • Adding a creamy fruit like a chopped banana is perfect to compliment the tangy taste of the berries, as it will add more sweetness to it.
  • Honey Granola sprinkle
  • Crushed Weetabix
  • Museli/ Toasted Buckwheat
  • Chia pudding
  • Or adding even more fruit is another option!Screen Shot 2015-05-29 at 12.38.23

Step 3: Any Extras?

If you want to add anymore toppings to more flavour, these are highly recommended!

  • Shredded Coconut
  • Cacao Nibs
  • Crushed Almonds (any nuts)/seeds
  • Dried fruit
  • A blob of Whole earth peanut butterScreen Shot 2015-05-29 at 12.41.45

You can mix and match any of the smoothies with the toppings for your own desired taste!

Vegan, sugar-free magnum choco-blocks

What you need:

  •  Blender
  • Saucepan
  • 8 Ice cream moulds

Ingredients (makes 8):

For the ice cream:

  • 2 ripe bananas, frozen
  • 1 400mL can full fat coconut milk, chilled if possible
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • t teaspoon vanilla bean paste

For the chocolate:

Method

For the ice cream: Pop the ice cream ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into ice cream moulds, add your sticks and pop into the freezer to set overnight.

For the chocolate: Put all the ingredients into a pan and heat on a very low heat until you create a smooth consistency. Be careful not to burn/overcook.

When you get the ice creams out, allow to defrost for a few minutes so they come out of the moulds easily. Alternatively run the moulds under hot water to loosen the edges.

To make the magnum…

Classic: Dip the ice cream into a bowl of chocolate. Use a icing knife to smooth out any edges but be quick because it should set almost immediately. Repeat to create a nice thick layer of chocolate. Pop back into the freezer for a few minutes to completely freeze. Enjoy!

Almond: As per Magnum Classic, but add a handful of slithered almonds to sandwich between chocolate layers.

Peppermint: As per Magnum Classic, but add 1 tablespoon of mint extract (or to taste), a handful of fresh mint and a few drops of green food colouring/spirulina  to the ice cream mixture.

Storage: in a freezer safe container in the freezer for up to 5 days.

Why Drink Chi during
A Workout?

As we all know it’s so important to drink water, particularly during a workout. But what should we drink during intense exercise? Its hard to find a drink that will keep you hydrated and give you the energy needed. In this article you will find a few suggestions of drinks that you could drink during your workout.

First we have to understand what our body needs.

When we sweat we loose a lot electrolytes. Here are the common electrolytes that we loose during working out:

– Sodium & Calcium

– Potassium

You must replace them by drinking a fluid that contains electrolytes. Water does not contain electrolytes.

Also we need carbs to refuel & give you energy and proteins helps to repair any damage.

What is the right amount to drink?

Doctors recommend to drink 8 ounces every 15 minutes during workout and to ‘drink to thirst’. But don’t drink too much because consuming a lot of fluid but not enough sodium can develop an hyponatremia condition. However this case is really rare most people don’t drink enough!

So what to drink?

For sure water is the easiest solution, it’s fine to consume it when it’s not an intense workout. But water doesn’t contain electrolytes.

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 14.02.11

Chi Raw Coconut Water suits an intense workout perfectly as it contains a high level of electrolytes and also it gives you the energy needed from its natural sugars.

Raw250

If  you prefer milk-type drinks, why not try our Dairy Free Chi Chocolate Coconut Milk.

Chocoloate milk 1ltr

After working out what to get?

Doctors recommend to have protein & carbs after workout. As we saw previously, protein repairs any muscle damage and carbs give you energy. So it’s time to make some delicious smoothies with Chi Coconut Milk!

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 14.49.07

What you need:

2 Bananas

2 large handfuls of spinach roughly chopped

2 handfuls of blueberries

7 large strawberries chopped

1 cup of Chi coconut milk

Chi coconut water to thin if needed

1/2 cup Flax seed

Now you know what you have to drink,  go workout!

Eat less sugar! You
will see the difference.

Everywhere you can hear ‘eat less sugar, sugar is bad for you’. Of course, you would like to eat less sugar, but it’s hard and you don’t know how. Don’t worry. I am here to help you figure out how to reduce sugar to become healthier.

So first let’s try to understand why we love sugar so much?

All humans have loved sugar for years and years.  Sweet is associated with the notion of pleasure and reward in our brain. When we eat sugar we secrete dopamine (the neurotransmitter of pleasure) so obviously, as it’s joyful to eat sugar, you just want to repeat this behaviour. That’s why all the junk food is full of sugar even in salty foods.

How to eat less sugar?

You have to change your bad  habits and relearn how to eat healthy without being on crazy diets. Just choose healthy food with good quality, fruits & vegetables and eat less processed foods as possible. Changing habits will take time but you will see the difference in the long term and you will also change your taste. Time to try new things!

What are the alternatives to sugar?

The best alternative to sugar is fruits such as bananas, grapes, strawberries… they are full of vitamins and they contain a lot nutritional content. However, beware of pure fruit juice, as you are just drinking pure fructose which will turn to fat.

You have some healthy sugar such as:

Coconut palm sugar (extracted sap of the coconut palm, boiled and dehydrated)

images-3

Date sugar (dehydrated, ground dates)

images-4

Brown rice syrup (brown rice, which is cooked and then exposed to enzymes which breaks it down into sugar)

images-5

Why not try our Raw Coconut Water – no added sugar!  As nature intended!

Chi was at the
London Ethnic Event

This weekend Chi was at the London Ethnic event for ‘Fashion Revolution Day’ which was launched after the horrific Rana Plaza catastrophe in Dhaka, Bangladesh the 24 April 2013.The factory collapse led to 1133 victims dead and thousands more injured, casting a dark shadow over the history of fashion.

The event took place at the Lollipop Gallery in London on the 24th of April 2015 for the fashion workers who lost their lives that terrible day. London Ethnic event was there to raise money for their families and increase awareness of the human work exploitation in fashion. Going
RAW

We are proud to announce that you can now buy 100% RAW coconut water from Chi! We are so excited for you to taste this delicious product: totally untampered with –  Left as nature intended it to be left (perfect!). Available at OCADO, Whole Foods, Planet Organic with more stockists being added monthly.

FRESH – NO ADDED SUGAR – NO PRESERVATIVES – COLD-EXTRACTION – ORGANIC – NEVER HEATED – 100% PURE – RAW – NOT FROM CONCENTRATE.

So how do we get it?

The coconut water found within young green coconuts in Thailand is very easily altered when heated. That is why when you drink coconut water which is not raw, it does’t quite bring back that same memory of sipping coconuts on holiday – however refreshing and lovely it may be. However, Chi has found a way to keep the fresh coconut water in Thailand in its natural RAW form! We use high pressure processing to do this – keeping the coconut water cold at all times: from when the coconut is cracked open by our farmers to the moment you pick it up from the shelves in your closest store. High pressure processing allows the coconut water to have a longer refrigerated shelf life while also allowing all the natural flavours to remain exactly the same. We do not add any preservatives or heating to the product – it is simply simple! This means that the nutritional content is also unchanged.

Watch this video on how we make our coconut water:

Chi Organic Raw Coconut Water – No Gimmicks. No Celebrity Lifestyle to sell. from Serendipity Films on Vimeo.

Where does RAW coconut water come from?

Our coconuts come from a region called ‘Ratchaburi’ in Western Thailand where the rich soil and tropical climate offer the perfect environment for producing uniquely great tasting coconuts. The word Ratchaburi means “The land of the king” and the provence is located 80km west of Bangkok, bordering Burma. The soil is perfect for coconuts to grow here – with the Mae Klong River flowing through the centre of Ratchaburi town.  Hence why Thailand is renowned for producing the world’s best tasting coconut water.

Why go RAW?

The main reason to go RAW is for the taste – incredibly fresh and unique!  However, other reasons may be that Chi RAW coconut water is packed with naturally occurring electrolyte minerals including potassium, calcium and magnesium. We only use hand-picked young Nam-Hom coconuts – always harvested at the perfect moment for peak nutrition! We never mix the ages or varieties of our coconuts – giving a consistently fresh and pure taste.

Our RAW coconut water is also sustainable – as Chi trades fairly. We are contributing to the environmental impact of production: creating a sustainable balance between farming and wild ecosystems. Chi RAW coconut also works hand in hand with ‘Drop4Drop.org’ in order to deliver water wells to communities that need it most.

Why does RAW coconut water go pink?

This is a natural occurrence and it is due to active anti-oxidants found within coconut water. It is nature’s way of blushing!

The colour doesn’t change the taste, it is still so good.

3. Chi products can encourage you to make healthier meals!

Breakfast is key to a healthy lifestyle. Why not try our Chi coconut milk in porridge? Porridge releases energy slowly throughout the day – meaning you’re less likely to snack before lunch. By using Chi coconut milk in your porridge it will also taste much creamier – meaning you might be able to resist that temptation of a maple syrup topping!

Coconut_Porridge20681

Our coconut oil is also perfect for making you lunch or supper lighter. Coconut oil can be used as a substitute in cooking just like olive oil or butter, but it is much healthier! The coconut oil also gives vegetables a great taste when used for frying or cooking… hopefully encouraging you to make more of them!

Chi’s collaboration with Work
– Well – Being

OUR COLLABORATION WITH WORK -WELL-BEING.

Chi coconut water was proud to support Work Well Being on the 13th of March for their first ever event!

WHAT IS WORK – WELL – BEING?

Louise and Abby are passionate & experienced practitioners and advocates of everything wellbeing! Both having many years experience within these practices has resulted in them establishing a network of the very best Wellbeing Warriors (teachers!) in London today.

Their belief is that there is a better way to work, we are working longer and harder than ever before, with time for our own personal wellbeing being pushed to the bottom of our to-do-list. It is time for employers to provide their staff something far more meaningful, wellbeing.

Work-Well-Being are on a mission to change the way we work, with the belief that wellbeing should be a core part of the working day, not something that individuals are forced to try and cram in during their few spare hours of an evening, or an often already full-packed weekend. Not only are the benefits of this huge to the individual, wellbeing is also a real business tool. There is no trade-off between living a well-rounded life and high performance; performance is actually improved when our lives include time for reflection, restoration and renewal. An environment where people are happy in their jobs and given the respect and freedom to be themselves will enable the best work and ideas to flourish.

The services that Work-Well-Being offer make it a whole lot easier for the workplace to offer wellbeing to their employees! They program the full day using their network of the very best teachers, manage all of the internal promotion of the event, manage all class sign-ups, provision of equipment & insurance and importantly evaluate the success & impact of the event to the workplace.

How Chi helped Work-Well-Being event

During Work-Well-Being’s event there where 2 yoga classes,2 meditation sessions an inspirational talk on How to Manage Work Stress and individual Health Coaching consultations. Bircher muesli with
chocolate coconut milk

The key to the perfect Bircher museli is to soak the oats overnight to achieve a chewier consistency. This improves the digestion and the absorption of this nutrient dense muesli. We wanted to try this super power breakfast using our own products – and doesn’t chocolate flavoured Bircher muesli sound a great idea?!

Our chocolate coconut milk gives you that taste without the guilt – dairy free and rich in vitamins and minerals. We made our Bircher muesli at Chi HQ using the following recipe… go on, give it a try!

Chocolate/coconut Bircher muesli.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 1 cup of rolled oats.
  • 1/2 coarsely grated apple.
  • 2 tbsp sultanas.
  • 2 tbsp cashews. (other nuts can be used if you prefer. Almonds and walnuts also work well!)
  • 1 tbsp honey or agave. (optional)
  • 250ml of Chi chocolate coconut milk.

RECIPE

  • Add all the dry ingredients to a bowl and mix them up.
  • If you have a sweet tooth add honey or agave. We recommend 1tbsp.
  • Pour Chi chocolate coconut milk over the mixture.
  • Leave the mixture in the fridge overnight to be served cold the next morning. This works perfectly with a coffee to kick start your day! …Or a Chi espresso dairy free coconut milk  😉

‘A super healthy version of a very popular everyday snack / energy bar just got a lot better. A clean approach is essential here so instead of using butter and sugars, Chi Coconut Oil and Honey are the sticky/combining agents. Also the crunchy peanut butter provides texture and flavour to the bar. Enjoy as a breakfast or as a Pre workout (whatever your sport/activity is) fuel..also ideal as a Recovery/Post trinity food to replenish glycogen used by your muscles.’

A day in the life of
a top stand up paddle boarder

For the last 3 years, Chi has sponsored one of the UK’s top stand up paddle boarders, Pete Holliday.  Pete competes nationally and internationally in both long distance endurance races on SUP and Outrigger Canoes, as well as surfing for fun as much as possible.

We caught up with Pete to find out about his active lifestyle, and how coconuts and Chi fit into his daily routine.

So, you’re a big fan of coconuts, right?
Pete: “Absolutely! Coconuts, in one form or another, play a huge part in my healthy lifestyle.  They literally are the most magical fruit on the planet.”

We totally agree! So, how do coconuts and Chi fit into your routine?
Pete: “I’m a morning person for sure, especially in the summer – I like to rise with the sun. From Spring until Autumn, when the light is with us, I rise to the sound of my alarm at 5am. I’ll grab my training gear, and a carton of Chi Coconut Water, and be out on the water by around 5.30am for hard intervals or a long distance training session lasting around 1 to 1.5hrs. “

IMG_3482

Wow! That’s pretty early…
Pete: “Well, I’m lucky enough to live just 2 minutes from the beautiful sandy beach of Boscombe near Bournemouth where I do most of my training. A stunning part of the world right on my doorstep.”

We’re jealous! Tell us more…
Pete: “After training and hitting the shower, I moisturise with my home made recipe, Chi Coconut Oil scented with some organic cedar & sandalwood oil to make it masculine & fresh. Then it’s time to grab a quick breakfast.  If I have time, there’s no beating a good solid cooked breakfast. If I’m in a rush, it’s a smoothie, typically a mix of Chi Coconut milk, a spoon of Chi Coconut Oil, half an avocado, a good glug of organic raw double cream, a couple of raw egg yolks and a sprinkle of organic raw cacao powder.  Bang it through the blender & hey presto!”

Sounds delicious. How else do you use Chi products in your recipes?
Pete: “One thing I can’t leave the house without is coffee.  I’m officially a coffee geek with a rather fine collection of modern and antique espresso machines and paraphernalia.  Many years ago I used to have sugar in every coffee, but as part of a major change in my diet and lifestyle, I more or less dropped sugar of any form from my diet.  Coconut oil was my saviour in espresso.  It might sound a little strange but it really smoothes out the taste & provides a nice hit of medium chain fatty acids too. Try it & see, I’ve converted a lot of people over the years!”

Ah yes, the wondrous bulletproof coffee. It’s pretty popular here in London! So, what about lunch?
Pete: “Lunch for me is usually left overs from dinner, all real food (not processed), locally sourced, home cooked and never microwaved! I’m a big meat eater, which isn’t for everyone, but I source carefully and have a fantastic independent, local butcher who sells organic meat raised and slaughtered within my home county of Dorset.”

“If I need a snack during the day then coconuts often come to hand again, they are an excellent source of energy. I buy them whole, drain the water (which of course I drink) and then break them open to get the white ‘meat’.  Diced up, it keeps hunger at bay for hours. “

image005

We’re starting to think you like coconuts even more than we do! Where does your love come from?
Pete: “I’m blessed to have travelled a lot of the world, particularly across Asia where coconuts are a great little meal and taste so good when still green and freshly cut from the tree right there and then.  You pay pennies for them. I always try and get a local kid to get me one to give them some pocket money.”

Tell us more about your rigorous training routine.
Pete: “I train typically 6 days a week and a few of those are two sessions a day. If I have a hard morning session then I might switch it up and so some yoga in the evening to keep good mobility, strength and balance. I definitely don’t just paddle, mixing up training is so important to me to maintain motivation so I throw in swimming sessions, hill sprints, bike rides, weights circuits and balance sessions to keep things interesting. Most importantly, if there are waves I’m surfing!”

Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 14.37.48

That’s impressive! What about your other hobby, outrigger canoe paddling?
Pete: “Outrigger canoe paddling is an ancient sport which originated in Polynesia thousands of years ago.   You sit in a small lightweight canoe, with a smaller ‘float’ on one side like a stabiliser.  Used for paddling open ocean, they are an amazing craft for escaping from everyone! I’ll often head several kilometres out to sea- a chance to catch some peace and really appreciate the nature around me.  We get dolphins and seals regularly coming to say hi in Bournemouth and this summer thousands of huge jellyfish.  You just don’t get to experience that kind of thing running on a treadmill in a gym.”

Sounds like heaven…
Pete: “It mostly is, but funnily enough, coconut oil has played a rather embarrassing (but valuable) part in my canoe paddling.  Sometimes, after really long paddles, you get tender skin sores in delicate places (let’s leave that there)… coconut oil, with its antibacterial qualities, really helps heal sore skin as well as protecting against future rash.  Coconut’s healing properties are so good I even used it to heal my tattoos instead of chemical based substitutes.”

Great tip! So, lastly, how do you like to end your day?
Pete: “After evening training, it’s time to cook a good feast at home and settle down on the sofa to catch my breath.  If I fancy a bit of desert then I whip up a quick bowl of organic natural yogurt and Chi coconut milk, sprinkled with organic desiccated coconut.”

That sounds incredible. Thanks for catching up with us Pete! We wish you all the best for 2015.

Keep an eye on Pete’s races and travels via his blog or Instagram www.peterholliday.co.uk www.instagram.com/pete_holliday

1, 2,
3… Relax

We live in a very stressful world. On a daily basis we are affected by the stresses of life, both physically and emotionally.

Knowing how to relax is vital for ensuring your health and wellbeing. You deserve it, it’s good for you and it takes less time than you think.

Here are a few tips that can truly help you relax, refresh and recharge.

1. Drink tea

Herbal teas that calm, soothe and relax have great value in today’s often hectic world. So, select your favourite herbal tea, sit back, and relax.

Camomile tea is the traditional favorite for calming the mind but even English Breakfast tea may help you fight stress.

2. Eat Raw Chocolate

Cacao is the ingredient found in chocolate. It is high in flavonoids, which are potent with relaxation properties. It also contains phenethylamine, a chemical that enhances mood. The darker the chocolate, the more of these substances you are getting. Generally, opt for bars with 70% cacao or higher.

3. Meditate

A few minutes of practice per day can help ease anxiety. The powerful tool of meditation can help you to achieve calmness, peace of mind, joy, vibrant health and greater energy.

The goal of meditation is to focus and quiet your mind. You can do it anywhere and at any time, allowing yourself to access a sense of tranquility and peace no matter what’s going on around you. It’s powerful and effective, plus it’s completely free!

4. Have a massage

Having a massage is more than relaxing me-time. Studies continue to prove the physical and emotional benefits of even a single massage therapy session. You can also do your own hand massage for instant relaxation that calms a pounding heart. Hands in general can carry a lot of tension. Apply some Chi 100% Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and start kneading the base of the muscle under the thumb to relieve stress in the shoulders, neck and scalp.

5. Do Yoga

Yoga is a path to health, relaxation and inner happiness. Through yoga, you cleanse your body and mind systematically, removing the build-up of tension.

If you don’t have time for a full class, you can try the Viparita Kiraniyoga pose. This pose involves lying on the floor and resting the legs up against a wall. Not only does it give the body a good stretch, but it helps create peace of mind too

6. Exercise

Do you know that when we do exercise our bodies release feel good hormones, which make us calmer? Exercise also uses up some of the hormones that the body makes when it’s stressed. The physical health benefits of exercise are well known but the mental health benefits are becoming more appreciated. Choose your favourite activity and feel the amazing benefits of feeling more centred and relaxed.

7. Pick your own way to relax

Different activities work for different people. Some people may find reading a book or magazine for 10 minutes a good way to relax. Others may find a therapeutic value in gardening or even cleaning!

So, pick your own way to relax and enjoy it.

Have a relaxed weekend everyone! 🙂

Autumn Sweet Potato and
Coconut Oil Recipes

Today marks the 1st October, one of our favourite months. Not only do we get all the excitement of Halloween, we get all those beautiful Autumn colours and foods too! Namely, autumn/winter vegetables! Amongst our favourites of these seasonal autumnal vegetables, is the sweet potato; an extremely bright, delicious and versatile veg, packed with vitamins and minerals.

The sweet potato can be boiled, baked, roasted and fried, just like a normal potato, and tastes particularly good when cooked in Coconut Oil. The health benefits of Coconut Oil are plenty, and it’s a much healthier alternative to most other cooking oils. See: The Lowdown on Coconut Oil to find out more.

To celebrate the beginning of Autumn, here’s some of our favourite Sweet Potato and Coconut Oil recipes to keep you healthy and warm this October…

Lobster & Swan’s Vegan Sweet Potato, Carrot and Ginger Soup

Screen Shot 2014-10-01 at 15.21.33

Ingredients:
1 Tbsp coconut oil
2 red onions, diced
2 gloves garlic, crushed
1 green chilli, diced
1″ fresh ginger, grated
1 large sweet potato, chopped
5 large carrots, peeled and chopped
1Tbsp vegan vegetable and gluten free stock
Salt and pepper
A fresh boiled kettle of water
Optional basil leaf for decoration

Method:
Set a large pan over a low heat add the coconut oil, once melted add onions, garlic and chilli and cook for 3-5 minutes until softened.
Add the potato and carrots and grated ginger to the pan, stir for a minute or so then pop in the stock and stir for a further minute. Pour over a kettle full of boiled water (roughly about 1.6L) and season with a little salt and pepper, I never go over board with the seasoning and let who ever is eating the soup add more to their preference.Turn up the heat and bring the soup to the boil, once it’s bubbling lower the heat back down and simmer for 40 minutes.
Check the veg is soft then take soup off the heat and let it cool for 30 minutes or so before blending.
Enjoy with some crusty bread or some buttered rice cakes.

Coconut Oil for Dry
Skin and Hair

As we move towards October, it is important to start protecting ourselves from the damaging effects of the cold, winter weather. During these colder months, dryness in the air forces our hair, skin and nails to behave very differently.
Compensating for this loss of natural moisture in the air can be challenging, but here at Chi, we have an all-in-one solution for you…

COCONUT OIL

Labelled as “nature’s wonder oil,” Coconut Oil is packed with nutrients that can help to nourish dry hair skin and hair. Organic, Virgin, Coconut Oil is also a natural and effective way to lessen your exposure to the toxins and chemicals found in many everyday beauty products. Many moisturisers, shampoos and conditioners contain alcohols and petroleum-based ingredients that can suffocate the skin and damage hair. Commercial beauty brands often contain a lot of water too, which makes you feel like your skin/hair are being moisturised, but as soon as the water dries, your skin dries.  In contrast, coconut oil provides deep and real moisture. It helps to strengthen underlying tissues and remove excessive dead cells on the skin’s surface, as well as strengthen hair follicles and add shine for gorgeous, silky locks.

Grab yourself a jar of Chi Organic Virgin Coconut Oil here, and follow these 3 easy steps for hydrated hair, skin and nails this Winter…

Screen Shot 2014-09-26 at 15.55.35For Hair…

1. Wash your hair using a natural and organic shampoo. We recommend Green People’s range. Rinse with lukewarm water.

2. Apply a generous amount of Coconut Oil to your hair, and comb through to the ends. (Tip: leave about 1 inch of the roots un-oiled to avoid the greasy-look!)

3. Leave for 10 – 30 minutes. Rinse once or twice and leave the hair to dry naturally.

4. Repeat once a week.

blake lively link

For Skin…

1. Cleanse face as per your usual routine.

2. Apply a small amount of coconut oil around the delicate eye area, and any dry patches. (Tip: coconut oil also makes a great lip balm!)

3. Allow 10 minutes to soak into the skin before applying make-up.

Screen Shot 2014-09-26 at 15.57.01For Nails…

1. Remove any existing nail polish and soak your hands in warm water.

2. Massage coconut oil into your hands, concentrating on the cuticle and nail area.

3. Sit back, relax and allow 10 minutes to soak into the skin.

4. Apply your favourite nail polish. (We recommend Zoya – free from harsh chemicals and toxins.)

Beautiful skin also comes from within. Remember to drink plenty of water and coconut water during winter.
